British multinational Jaguar contemplates turning its entire lineup electric by 2030.

Jaguar plans on changng its entire lineup to electric only vehicles.

According a report by Autocar, that means no hybrids and no plug-in hybrids for the British multinational car manufacturer, just pure battery electric models.

The report continues to explain that the company has already developed a tentative plan that starts with producing a new electric model to replace the XJ by the end of the current decade.

At the moment, the only European or American car company making only battery electrics is Tesla, therefore, Jaguar would compete directly with the Tesla Model S as well as the upcoming Porsche Taycan.

According to Clean Technica, all of Jaguar’s current models, including sports cars, are set to be replaced by new and updated versions by 2025. This leaves the door open for all new electric sports car from the Leaping Cat brand.

There are three reasons for Jaguar’s decision:

  • The I-PACE — Jaguar’s new battery electric SUV — is creating a lot of excitement in the marketplace and reservations are pouring in. If Jaguar was concerned that the buying public wasn’t ready for an electric car, those worries have now been put aside.

  • Jaguar’s iconic sedan, the XJ, is experiencing a significant decline in sales and is due for a complete redesign soon. However, declines are not always bad, as this now creates the opportunity to build a new sedan that can compete head to head with the Tesla Model S and the upcoming Porsche Taycan.

  • Jaguar is a junior partner in the Jaguar Land Rover business model. Land Rover provides most of the sales and most of the profits for Tata, parent company of JLR. Management believes electric power does not fit as comfortably with the go anywhere, do anything, image of Land Rover.
