Volkswagen and Mobileye plan to launch a commercial self-driving service in Israel this year.

The German automaker has a plan to launch a commercial self-driving ride-hailing service in Israel in 2019, and Mobileye is a crucial part of making it a real thing.
With this, VW aims to propel itself to the very front of the companies working to commercialize autonomous driving, like Alphabet’s Waymo and GM’s Cruise. Volkswagen will provide the electric vehicles and Mobileye its autonomous driving technology. Champion Motors, Israel’s second largest car importer and distributor, will run fleet management operations, the companies said in a statement on Monday.
Details such as in what city will receive the first launch weren’t immediately announced, but the Israeli government has mentioned to be 100% on board and ready to supply the regulatory and infrastructural support the companies will require.
Automakers are teaming up with tech companies to gain a head start in driverless technology, which is expected to upend the transportation industry. This is just another sample of the evolution of the industry.
Israel-based Cognata, a developer of simulation platforms for self-driving cars, said on Tuesday, March 19th, that it was partnering with U.S. chip supplier Nvidia Corp to speed up testing and validation for autonomous driving.
