Reuters ranked the institutions that best stand out regarding academic credentials.<\/p>\n

Throughout the years, universities in the US have stood out when it comes to enrollment and offering a wide-range of innovative programs to students, demonstrating the power and reach of public investment in education that still thrives in the country, which is even more remarkable in this\u00a0decade of retreating taxpayer investment<\/a>\u00a0in colleges, writes Forbes contributor Derek Newton.<\/p>\n

This is why Reuters, in partnership with Clarivate Analytics, discovered<\/a> that the top five on the planet are in the United States,\u00a0with\u00a0Stanford University leading for fifth consecutive year\u00a0because it produces a steady stream of innovations that are cited by other researchers in academia and private industry, according to the report.<\/p>\n

MIT comes in the second position while Harvard is third. The\u00a0University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill complete the top six, while\u00a0Belgium\u2019s KU Leuven, a nearly 600-year-old institution that maintains one of the largest independent research and development organizations on the planet, brakes the US dominance and becomes the 7th most innovative university in the world.<\/p>\n

In regional basis, North America has 48 universities in the top 100, Europe, which has made important improvements in France, with all its universities making big gains, including new entrants like the Aix-Marseille University and Sorbonne, has 32 (up five from last year), while Asia has 18 (down five), and the Middle East has 2. It\u2019s important to note that there are no universities in the top 100 located in Africa, South America or Oceania.<\/p>\n

The Reuters ranking<\/a> measures innovation on an institutional level, but absence from the list doesn\u2019t indicate an institution is failing to innovate; a university might rank low for overall innovation, but still operate one of the world\u2019s best high energy physics labs, for instance. And it\u2019s important to note that whether they\u2019re in the top five or bottom five, all 100 universities in this ranking are among the best in the world. The global list is restricted to institutions that filed 70 or more patents with the World Intellectual Property Organization during the five-year period examined by Thomson Reuters.<\/p>\n
