{"id":15195,"date":"2017-11-16T05:30:57","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T05:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=15195"},"modified":"2018-01-10T21:43:27","modified_gmt":"2018-01-10T21:43:27","slug":"goodbye-concept-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/opinion\/goodbye-concept-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye concept of weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Your mobile phone, laptop and a pile of work undone are attempting every Friday to give you a weekend headache.<\/em><\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On May 1, 1886, in booming, industrial Chicago, at least 30,000 workers walked off the job in what would become one of the most famous rallies for a shorter workweek in America.<\/p>\n<p>The shutdown left the usually smoke-filled skies eerily clear. The \u201cgreat refusal,\u201d as it is sometimes known, ultimately resulted in a confrontation a few days later between police and protesters that left several people on both sides dead.<\/p>\n<p>In a courtroom spectacle, eight demonstrators were convicted of murder, and seven of those eight were sentenced to death. One killed himself in jail and four were hanged in public.<\/p>\n<p>Still, protests continued, as did bloodshed, until the passing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/oasam\/programs\/history\/flsa1938.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938<\/a> enshrined the modern weekend for all workers.<\/p>\n<p>Americans had finally achieved the promise of an eight-hour day and 40-hour workweek, a buttress against the Industrial Revolution\u2019s crippling workload.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a century later, however, the weekend has been eroded by overbooked schedules, pinging devices and encroaching work demands.<\/p>\n<p>It took decades for American workers to wrest a precious fraction of their week\u2019s hours away from the iron grip of the factory boss.<\/p>\n<p>Yet for many of today\u2019s workers, the concept of 48 work-free hours is an anachronism.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>The weekend as it was originally envisioned is being lost.<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Importantly, while the weekend is a relatively new invention, the five-day workweek was not a solely altruistic creation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15202\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15202\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15202\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-500x333.jpg 500w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-580x386.jpg 580w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-600x400.jpg 600w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-700x466.jpg 700w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ss.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photographer: Ben Baker\/Redux, Bloomberg Businessweek.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Henry Ford was an early adopter of the five-day workweek after realizing that a weekend could both keep workers happy and give them an incentive to spend \u2014 which might make him even more money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who have more leisure must have more clothes,\u201d he said. \u201cThey eat a greater variety of food. They require more transportation in vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s richest, Carlos Slim, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-08-04\/mexico-s-richest-man-wants-a-three-day-workweek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wants a three-day workweek<\/a>, he thinks his plan will spur on economies with more tourism, entertainment, and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Shorter workweeks are a solution to civilization shifts. Historically, the more technology advances and the more progress there is, people work less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening now is that people live longer, in better health, and without the need for physical effort. This civilization demands more knowledge, more experience, less physical exertion.<\/p>\n<p>Productivity has increased exponentially\u2014despite the denial of some economists\u201d, he explained <em>Bloomberg Businessweek<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Facts that do not help at all on having a peaceful weekend: Lancet, the medical journal, published a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(15)60295-1\/abstract\"> study<\/a> that shows that the risk of stroke among employees who work 55 or more hours per week is 33% higher than those with a 35 to 40 hour week.<\/p>\n<p>In a fragile economy, performing business can seem like a necessary survival tactic.
