Amazon in Seattle generated an additional $1.40 for the city\u2019s economy overall.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/b?node=17044620011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon HQ2<\/a>, the company will\u00a0invest over $5 billion in construction and create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs in their selected spot.<\/p>\n<p>And as an estimate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/p\/feature\/xqkh4k2t3q8s3yv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$38 billion USD<\/a> are promised to fly inside the chosen city\u2019s economy, the\u00a0full equal to the current campus in Seattle is being battled between many North American cities.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does it take to be the new home of Amazon?<\/p>\n<h6><strong>A new home<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>In September 2017, Amazon\u00a0announced the initiative alongside with a request for proposals from governments and economic development organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Over\u00a0100 cities in Canada, the United States and Mexico responded to the several phase 1 core requirements the company outlined which ended on October 19th. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moderncities.com\/article\/2017-dec-jacksonvilles-pitch-for-amazon-hq2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modern Cites<\/a>, these were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being a metropolitan area with a population of over 1 million.<\/li>\n<li>Be within 30 miles of a population center.<\/li>\n<li>Be within 45 minutes to an international airport.<\/li>\n<li>Have proximity to major highways and arterial roads 1\u20133 miles.<\/li>\n<li>Easy access to mass transit routes.<\/li>\n<li>Account for up to 8 million square feet of office space for future expansion.<\/li>\n<li>Count with optional preferences including airports with direct flights to Seattle, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., urban locations, and proximity to major universities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6 class=\"articleHeadline\"><strong>Toronto, the only non-U.S. city in the shortlist<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>On January 18th, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amazonnews\/status\/953992027611344896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon announced<\/a> the 20 cities to move on to phase 2, these were:\u00a0Toronto, Columbus, Indianapolis, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, Los Angeles, Dallas, Austin, Boston, New York City, Newark, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Montgomery County, Washington, D.C., Raleigh, Northern Virginia, Atlanta, and Miami.<\/p>\n<p>The list\u00a0concentrates heavily in the U.S. Midwest and the Northeast region, as no cities from the Pacific Northwest made the cut and\u00a0Los Angeles is the only West Coast representative.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/amazon-hq2-short-list-toronto-the-only-non-u-s-city-1.3764946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only Canada city<\/a> on the list while three of the finalists are in the Washington, D.C., area.
