Source: Reuters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During May, the unemployment rate for blacks sunk to 5.9%, the lowest since 1972 when the figure was first reported separately. In Memphis,\u00a0where 63% of the population is black and more than a quarter lives in poverty compared with a 14% national average, a \u2018gold rush\u2019 moment is present, as industries like\u00a0logistics and warehousing experience a &#8220;boom&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But there is an interesting milestone that haunts government upswings long before Trump took office: Past upswings have not been strong enough to endure the next economic downturn and\u00a0help workers weather the blow.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0minority hiring have remained clustered in industries such as food service, retail, and logistics, these markets tend to be the quickest to lay off staff when the economy slows, and the fear is that history repeats itself, leaving minorities vulnerable when leaner times arrive.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>STEM jobs, still behind<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since 1972, the\u00a0share of Blacks in the total labor force has never stopped growing, and it can reach a total of 21.6 million by 2026 according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, although Black employment continues to grow over the years,\u00a0Blacks and Hispanics continue to be underrepresented in STEM jobs (science, technology, engineering and math).<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for this, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2018\/01\/09\/blacks-in-stem-jobs-are-especially-concerned-about-diversity-and-discrimination-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">s<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2018\/01\/09\/blacks-in-stem-jobs-are-especially-concerned-about-diversity-and-discrimination-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urveyed Blacks already in STEM positions,<\/a>\u00a0are due to limited access to quality education, lack of encouragement to pursue these jobs from an early age,\u00a0discrimination in recruitment and not easy-to-find promotions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2018\/01\/09\/blacks-in-stem-jobs-are-especially-concerned-about-diversity-and-discrimination-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Social Trends reports<\/a> Blacks and Hispanics made up around 27% of the overall U.S. workforce as of 2016, but together they accounted for only 16% of those employed in a STEM occupation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16056\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-12.10.41-e1520619112653.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16056\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16056\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-12.10.41-e1520619112653-178x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-12.10.41-e1520619112653-178x300.png 178w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Captura-de-pantalla-2018-03-09-a-las-12.10.41-e1520619112653.png 339w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diverse perspectives and equal opportunities are important reasons to increase workplace diversity and productivity. Image: PEW<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>A matter that&#8217;s important<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite still having much to work on, changes have come.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a02017 Pew Research Center\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2017\/02\/16\/4-attitudes-toward-increasing-diversity-in-the-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0found that a majority of Americans believe that increasing number of people from different races, ethnic groups and nationalities in the U.S. makes the country a better place to live, while another 8-in-10 Americans say it is at least somewhat important to have racial and ethnic diversity in today\u2019s workplaces, including around half who categorize this as \u201cextremely\u201d (26%) or \u201cvery\u201d important (27%).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2018\/01\/09\/blacks-in-stem-jobs-are-especially-concerned-about-diversity-and-discrimination-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Social Trends<\/a> continues to explain that relatively few Americans view racial and ethnic diversity in today\u2019s workplaces as \u201cnot too\u201d (9%) or \u201cnot at all\u201d (9%) important.<\/p>\n<p>On how embracing diversity and racial inclusion boosts the workplace,\u00a045% of U.S. adults say it provides other perspectives that contribute to the overall success of companies and organizations.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Larger projection for Black women<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the past years, the share of African American women in the labor force has been growing to the pace of passing their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/spotlight\/2018\/blacks-in-the-labor-force\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics stated<\/a> that during 1988, men and women made up an equal share of the Black labor force.<\/p>\n<p>This began to change in 1989 and especially towards 2000, when the share of Black women in the workforce increased to 53% while the share of Black men declined to 47%.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, rates have started to stabilize, however, women projection is still set to increase more than the male landscape towards 2025, BLS reports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reports show growing recruitment among U.S. minorities, but history proves  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":19367,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[44],"tags":[844,324,385,646,1549,1548,520],"class_list":["post-16055","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entrepreneur","tag-black","tag-chief-executive-officer","tag-diversity","tag-gender","tag-minorities","tag-stem-jobs","tag-workforce"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16055","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=16055"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16055\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":19515,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16055\/revisions\/19515"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/19367"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=16055"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=16055"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=16055"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
