Just in Somalia and neighbor countries, there are over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/07\/africa\/somalia-famine-united-nations\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 million people<\/a>\u00a0in need of aid and food as they suffer from starvation and diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhsph.edu\/faculty\/directory\/profile\/1991\/roni-a-neff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roni Neff, a Johns Hopkins University researcher<\/a> who led a first-ever study examining the nutrients we&#8217;re tossing in the trash, has stated that if we were able to recover all of the wasted food in the U.S.,\u00a0we\u00a0could provide a 2,000-calorie diet to 84% of the population, stating the urgent and devastating effects of wasting food.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The numbers of waste<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Throwing food away means wasting resources and potential nutrients for people in need.<\/p>\n<p>[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=&#8221;show&#8221; ihc_mb_who=&#8221;3,4,5,6&#8243; ihc_mb_template=&#8221;3&#8243; ]<\/p>\n<p>Alarming numbers from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jandonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation-now\/2017\/05\/16\/food-waste-america-throwing-away-food-too-soon\/320035001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today<\/a> determined that just in the U.S., 31% to 40% of food is thrown away after it&#8217;s harvested, throwing out more than 1,200 calores per person every single day, which would be enough to feed\u00a074 million women or 48 million men on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>However, this results in a contradictory matter, as the U.S. is not a country that can afford to waste food as it is not an ideal place for healthy eating, as high reates of diabetes and obesity have dragged the country down to position 34, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/2017\/04\/healthiest-countries-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies reveal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This means that despite the average American men and women do not\u00a0receive enough dietary fiber and potassium, industrial quantities of food continue to be thrown away on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s next?
