King and Santana, faces a $375 million-dollar deadline for a debt repayment in less than six months\u2019 time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nashvillepost.com\/business\/music-business\/article\/20992105\/gibson-running-out-of-time-rapidly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Nashville Post<\/a>. A further $145 million worth of bank loans will come due immediately if those notes, issued in 2013, are not refinanced by July 23.<\/p>\n<p>Fender, on the other hand,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1013293\/rock-and-roll-is-dead-sales-of-fender-and-gibson-electric-guitars-prove-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abandoned a public offering<\/a> in 2012, as its revenue fell from $675 million to $545 million, and although the debt has been partially cut, it remains at $100 million.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson and Fender, among other six-string companies, face a dramatic slowdown that is forcing them to re-write their operating performance while on the verge of bankruptcy, but what pushed this situation to happen?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Whatever happened to guitars and\u00a0<em>rock<\/em>\u00a0&#8216;<em>n<\/em>&#8216;\u00a0<em>roll<\/em>? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Streaming services and a clear preference toward electronic genres are to blame for some, but others prefer to look inside the industry. Scotty Moore\u00b4s reverb-soaked Gibson on Elvis\u00b4s Sun records\u201d (\u2026) \u201cJohn Mayer?\u201d he continues, \u201cYou don\u00b4t see a bunch of kids emulating John Mayer and listening to him and wanting to pick up a guitar because of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/artists\/dear-guitar-hero-vernon-reid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vernon Reid<\/a>, guitarist and composer for Living Colour, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2017\/lifestyle\/the-slow-secret-death-of-the-electric-guitar\/?utm_term=.e1ed64988a7c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke to The Washington Post<\/a> about how culture has changed and how the power and influence of music was tougher and clearer before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a culture of guitar playing, and music was central. A record would come out and you would hear about that record, and you would make the journey. There was a certain investment in time and resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Lita Ford, lead guitarist for The Runaways, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2017\/lifestyle\/the-slow-secret-death-of-the-electric-guitar\/?utm_term=.e1ed64988a7c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remembers<\/a> watching Dick Clark, Ed Sullivan and Don Kirshner on their shows waiting desperately to see what band was featured on that week. \u00a0\u201cIt was just a different world\u201d, she recalls, \u201ceverybody would be around the TV like you\u00b4re watching a football game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the 80\u00b4s started to loom in, <a href=\"https:\/\/reverb.com\/news\/how-the-1990s-changed-recording-and-music-production-forever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technological changes became imminent<\/a> for\u00a0rock\u00a0&#8216;n&#8217;\u00a0roll, as albums began to use Portastudios, digital audio, hard-drive and disk-based recording, however, no matter how music became light on guitar, the six-string continues to be irreplaceable in music composition, so, why is the guitar dying so hard?<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.universityobserver.ie\/business\/music-is-in-dire-straits-what-has-been-instrumental-in-the-downturn-of-gibson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ciarian Busby article in University Observer<\/a> suggests a heart-breaking -but true- scenario: there just aren\u2019t any bands big enough or impressive enough to grasp the attention of potential younger players, and that\u00b4s killing the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Buddy Guy, one of the last R&amp;B guitarists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/features\/from-howlin-wolf-to-hendrix-the-life-and-times-of-buddy-guy-20151104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke to Rolling Stone in a 2015 interview<\/a> about his career and passion of performing live, closing with what his ambitions are for the future and the idea of continuing to play live:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I get off work, they rush me to the house, I take a shower, take a bowl of soup, come downstairs with my bag and head to the next gig&#8221; (&#8230;) &#8220;B.B. King dedicated his life to the blues until he couldn&#8217;t go no more,&#8221; says Guy. &#8220;Muddy, Wolf, all of them did it. Because they loved it as much as I do. And now I&#8217;m gonna do it myself. I think I owe that to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, what do we need to make guitars shine again? Maybe we need more eager-to-play kids, maybe Led Zeppelin needs to reunite and release an album, or maybe, just maybe, we need another B.B.
