Kendrick Lamar and The New Yorker received Pulitzers, one of America\u00b4s most prestigious awards.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Pulitzer Prize<\/a>\u00a0congratulates and recognizes progress and elevation in journalism.<\/p>\n

These prizes, considered the pinnacle of coverage achievements, are administered by Columbia University and awarded annually to diverse media works.<\/p>\n

This year, stories regarding the #MeToo movement,\u00a0abuse in the workplace, the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, and the Charleston, S.C. shooting were all considered for such distinction.<\/p>\n

A rapper in the Pulitzer history<\/strong><\/h6>\n

The Compton, California native is the first rap artist to achieve a Pulitzer, as the award is typically given to classical or jazz works.<\/p><\/div>\n

One of the most interesting issues this year\u00a0was that Kendrick Lamar\u00b4s music for his album \u201cDamn\u201d earned him a Pulitzer recognition.\u00a0“DAMN<\/a>” is Kendrick’s fourth studio album, it was released in\u00a0April 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For years, Kendrick has written and sang on political and social matters that hit near the core of his audience.<\/p>\n

While explaining what earned the rapper with the prestigious award, Variety refers to<\/a> Lamar\u00b4s music as \u201cA vast musical progression from the one that came before, but most importantly, his lyrics reflect his upbringing in Los Angeles\u2019 tough Compton area, the black experience in America, hip-hop\u2019s history and legacy, stardom and countless other topics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The award is typically given to classical or jazz works, so Kendrick is the first rapper to achieve so. Last year’s prize went to “Angel’s Bone”,<\/a> an opera by composer Du Yun.<\/p>\n
