Spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John said the company wants to &#8220;support a culture in which employees feel included and empowered.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>About 10 percent of its employees across all levels and geographies will receive pay adjustments, a Nike spokeswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-nike-wages\/nike-to-raise-wages-for-thousands-of-employees-idUSKBN1KD2FC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The changes are the latest example of efforts by Nike management to address concerns about pay equity and reshape the company\u2019s culture, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/inside-nike-a-boys-club-culture-and-flawed-hr-1522509975?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complaints of inappropriate workplace behavior and an executive purge<\/a> this past spring.<\/p>\n<p>The adjustments will begin in August and will be annualized over the balance of the fiscal year, which began June 1.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>The goal is changing the internal practices and culture<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Nike is just the latest major corporation to look at its internal practices and culture amid a heightened awareness of gender and other forms of workplace discrimination in recent years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/clareoconnor\/2017\/09\/14\/google-sued-for-gender-discrimination-by-female-former-employees\/#c6580ad50c9a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/03\/13\/technology\/microsoft-gender-discrimination-lawsuit\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bet.com\/news\/national\/photos\/2014\/06\/10-top-companies-hit-with-employee-racial-discrimination-suits.html#!070114-National-11-Top-Companys-Hit-With-Racial-Discrimination-Suits-Louis-Vuitton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walmart<\/a> are among other household names that have been forced to publicly, and sometimes embarrassingly, address such cases.<\/p>\n<p>The purge has been widely portrayed as Nike\u2019s #MeToo moment, yet in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/expo\/news\/erry-2018\/07\/93d33bff127706\/vanquishing_team_edwards_a_new.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed investigation<\/a> for <em>The Oregonian<\/em>, reporter Jeff Manning, who has followed the case closely, claims that the dismissals also represented a dramatic boardroom power play within the company.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the reason (and there are likely various), in a world of #MeToo and leaked memos, leading corporations&#8211;especially those which market their products and services towards socially conscious consumers&#8211;are increasingly having to reassess their internal cultures and make them more equitable and transparent.<\/p>\n<p>Companies will surely need to adjust to this new reality, or risk potentially damaging blows to their reputations.<\/p>\n<p>Nike has about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/243199\/number-of-employees-of-nike-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">74,400 employees worldwide<\/a>, according to a regulatory filing.
