Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n’s ROMA could become the 1st movie to win best picture\u00a0with no box-office gross.<\/p>\n

Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n’s\u00a0memories of growing up in Mexico City aim for the very top.<\/p>\n

Since he concluded \u201cChildren of Men\u201d in 2006, Cuar\u00f3n wanted to create an\u00a0autobiographical film based on his childhood, but the goal was not easy. In time,\u00a0through detail and precision, the Mexican would finally achieve his ultimate personal testament, and now, it has\u00a0received 10 Oscar nominations overall, including direction, cinematography, original screenplay, best actress and best supporting actress.<\/p>\n

But aside from the magic and nostalgia the filmmaker puts us through in the film, there is something very particular in this achievement: With no box-office gross, the meditative black-and-white film about life in Mexico City in the 1970s could win best picture.<\/p>\n

Amazon won three Oscars for a streaming studio\u00a0in 2017<\/a>, already setting the stage for streaming services worldwide, but now Netflix has gone a step further, as\u00a0the work of Cuar\u00f3n\u00a0has given the Reed Hastings company, and any other streaming company, its first-ever best picture nomination, shattering the idea that streaming companies were destined to be “Oscar\u00a0outsiders”.<\/p>\n

The magic of ROMA<\/h2>\n

Cuar\u00f3n spoke to\u00a0Variety<\/em><\/a>\u00a0during a whirlwind day of promoting the film ahead of its New York Film Festival premiere, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I wanted to understand, to put the pieces together (…) [Jorge Luis] Borges talks about how memory is an opaque, shattered mirror, but I see it more as a crack in the wall. The crack is whatever pain happened in the past. We tend to put several coats of paint over it, trying to cover that crack. But it\u2019s still there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first Netflix original film, 2015\u2019s \u201cBeasts of No Nation,\u201d was entirely ignored by Oscar voters. Inroads were made earlier this year with \u201cMudbound,\u201d which received four nominations, but a best-picture nod has thus far eluded Netflix, until now.<\/p>\n
