VW will reportedly invest $1.7 billion in Argo.ai, which is Ford&#8217;s autonomous vehicle (AV) technology subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The investment will give both Ford and VW a 50% stake in Argo, effectively making it a joint venture. VW may also fold other parts of its business into the joint venture, including Audi&#8217;s self-driving tech development unit and Moia, VW&#8217;s mobility services segment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The joint venture will focus on two areas: the joint development of self-driving tech, and the merging of production processes. When it was first reported the automakers were considering a partnership, we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/e.businessinsider.com\/click\/16127912.1250\/aHR0cHM6Ly9pbnRlbGxpZ2VuY2UuYnVzaW5lc3NpbnNpZGVyLmNvbS9wb3N0L3doYXQtdGhlLXZ3LWZvcmQtcGFydG5lcnNoaXAtc2hvdWxkLWxvb2stbGlrZS1vbGEtYWRkcy1hLW1vbnRobHktcGF5bWVudC1vcHRpb24td2FyZWhvdXNlLXNwYWNlLWRlY2xpbmVzLWFnYWluLTIwMTktMQ\/5bc4a934678089748b04a3b4Cc742c0cf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speculated<\/a>\u00a0that it&#8217;d be a high-level one focused on EV tech along with knowledge and data sharing. But the reported agreement will instead be AV-focused and also much deeper, honing in on two key areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>AV technologies:<\/strong> Developing autonomous driving tech is immensely expensive \u2014 VW and its subsidiaries had allocated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/e.businessinsider.com\/click\/16127912.1250\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYXV0b25ld3MuY29tL2FydGljbGUvMjAxODExMTYvT0VNMDUvMTgxMTE5NzkxL3Z3LXRvLXNwZW5kLTUwLTItYmlsbGlvbi1vbi1lbGVjdHJpYy1hdXRvbm9tb3VzLXZlaGljbGVzLWJ5LTIwMjM\/5bc4a934678089748b04a3b4B38dd9dbf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over $50 billion<\/a>\u00a0to develop new vehicle technologies through 2023, a sizeable chunk of which was set aside for AVs. For its part, Ford said it&#8217;ll spend about $800 million annually through 2023 on AV software and hardware \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/e.businessinsider.com\/click\/16127912.1250\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYXV0b25ld3MuY29tL2FydGljbGUvMjAxODA3MjQvTU9CSUxJVFkvMTgwNzI5ODY4L2ZvcmQtY29tbWl0cy00LWJpbGxpb24tdG8tYXV0b25vbW91cy12ZWhpY2xlcy1mb3Jtcy1uZXctc3Vic2lkaWFyeQ\/5bc4a934678089748b04a3b4B3268b08a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about $4 billion<\/a>\u00a0in total. Within the joint venture, VW and Ford will co-develop software and hardware for AVs, helping to alleviate some of the cost burden.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manufacturing and production:<\/strong> The two automakers will reportedly share factories and collaborate on production processes, though it isn&#8217;t yet clear in what capacity. To this end, VW is planning a massive expansion of its Chattanooga, Tennessee facility.
