{"id":20656,"date":"2019-03-12T23:33:23","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T23:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=20656"},"modified":"2019-03-13T17:32:56","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T17:32:56","slug":"uber-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/news\/uber-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"<Uber lawsuit>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Uber\u00a0settled a\u00a0lawsuit\u00a0with\u00a0drivers\u00a0who sought employment status, resolving a longstanding legal issue.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The fight over the classification of ride-sharing drivers as independent contractors appears to be over after Uber announced that it settled a pair of long-gestating lawsuits for $20 million.<\/p>\n<p>Uber Technologies Inc. will pay $20 million to settle California lawsuits challenging the company\u2019s classification of drivers as independent contractors, and not employees owed the benefits of traditional employment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-entry-summary p-dek\">The company gets to continue not paying for traditional benefits like paid sick time and workers\u2019 compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Resolution of the long-standing fight over benefits and pay comes as Uber is preparing for its initial public offering later this year. The litigation attacked the ride-sharing company\u2019s business model of treating its drivers as contractors to avoid the costs of paying a minimum wage, overtime, sick leave and health insurance.<\/p>\n<p>The cases turned on whether drivers were essentially forced by their contracts to resolve any conflicts one-on-one, behind the closed doors of private arbitration and forbidden to join forces in class-action lawsuits. Drivers argued Uber made it onerous for them to opt-out of the arbitration provisions.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement still requires a judge\u2019s approval, but Uber is ready to put the past behind it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUber has changed a lot since 2013,\u201d a spokesperson said in a statement. \u201cWe have made the driver experience even better through improvements like in-app tipping, a redesigned driver app, and new rewards programs like Uber Pro.
