Children are developing asthma\u00a0every year as a result of air pollution from traffic fumes.<\/p>\n

A landmark study published in medical journal\u00a0The Lancet<\/a>\u00a0has found that while global pediatric asthma prevalence has increased strikingly since the 1950s, several epidemiological studies done in North America, Latin America, Europe, and east Asia reported associations between traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure and new-onset asthma in children, whereas such associations are less clear in adults.<\/p>\n

This has resulted in over four million children developing asthma\u00a0every year as a result of air pollution from traffic, that’s equivalent to 11,000 new cases a day.<\/p>\n

Regionally, the index by The Lancet spotted that the largest burden of new asthma cases associated with NO2 exposure per 100000 children per year was estimated for Andean Latin America, and followed by high-income North America and high-income Asia Pacific, whilst the largest percentage of regional pediatric asthma incidence attributable to NO2 pollution was estimated for high-income Asia Pacific, followed by east Asia, high-income North America, southern Latin America, and western Europe.<\/p>\n

Breaking down the data,\u00a0Kuwait had the highest prevalence with 550 new cases recorded per 100,000 children each year. Canada came third with 450 new annual cases. The United States experienced an incidence rate of 300 new asthma cases per 100,000 children.<\/p>\n

The ugly truth<\/h2>\n

Despite good efforts, however, traffic is getting worse in many cities, and urban mobility has become increasingly complex.<\/p>\n

According to McKinsey<\/a>, just between 2010 and 2016, congestion in London rose by 14%, in Los Angeles by 36%, in New York by 30%, and in Beijing and Paris by 9%, multiplying the effects.<\/p>\n

The conditions have established that, as of today, 95% of the planet\u2019s population is forced to breathe unhealthy air, turning\u00a0deaths related to contamination the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0highest worldwide\u00a0after smoking, high blood pressure and a poor diet.<\/p>\n

According to the study,<\/a> Afghanistan, which is where most people die from pollution, followed by Pakistan, India, Nigeria, China and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
