{"id":21138,"date":"2019-05-13T17:04:14","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T17:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=21138"},"modified":"2019-05-13T22:04:34","modified_gmt":"2019-05-13T22:04:34","slug":"study-is-working-at-home-bad-for-your-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/ceo-life\/health\/study-is-working-at-home-bad-for-your-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Home office: A double-edged sword?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Can home office have a negative impact on our mental health?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more people are working remotely, swapping the traditional office environment and daily commute for the comfort of their own home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet research by HR consulting firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morneaushepell.com\/ca-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morneau Shepell of Canada<\/a> suggests that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isolation in the workplace affects 41% of employees and 38% of managers in the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those who said they experienced isolation, 40% described it as extreme. And the highest incidence of &#8220;extreme personal isolation&#8221; was cited by those who worked at home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We specifically speak about mental health and well-being, to look at how people are experiencing that in the workplace \u2014 what their challenges are, what works, what doesn&#8217;t work,&#8221; Paula Allen, VP of research and integrative solutions at Morneau Shepell, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/working-at-home-isolation-1.5103498\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told CBC.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm&#8217;s definition of workplace includes both those who work in an office\u2014possibly with little interaction with co-workers\u2014and those who work from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A new trend<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by Statistics Canada indicates the number of people working from home has been steadily rising, amounting to 2.5 million Canadians in 2016, or 12.6% of the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet according to Morneau Shepell, for almost all employers, mental health issues are the largest or second-largest cause of disability claims. And in another 30% of cases, mental health problems exacerbate a physical condition, for example, when someone with a pain disorder becomes depressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical isolation generally appears to be on the rise. A Statistics Canada report from March this year indicates the number of single-person households in the country has doubled over the past 35 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Double-edged sword <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, an increasing number of companies are encouraging remote work, recognizing that workers can be productive anywhere.
