{"id":21339,"date":"2019-08-12T12:10:02","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T12:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=21339"},"modified":"2019-11-11T21:23:56","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T21:23:56","slug":"major-upheaval-for-global-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/management-leadership\/major-upheaval-for-global-democracy\/","title":{"rendered":"Divided views on global democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Findings from a new Pew Research Center survey show there&#8217;s considerable\u00a0dissatisfaction in many countries\u00a0with how democracy is working in practice.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the midst of political deterioration and social setbacks on the\u00a0international and geopolitical context, concern has been growing for the past several years about the\u00a0future of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Across the world, countries and organizations have already begun to document global declines of democracy and the\u00a0political polarization, racial inequality, discrimination, and authoritarian bias that encourage it, finding that\u00a0there&#8217;s a general dissatisfaction in many countries regarding how democracy works and is held at practice.<\/p>\n<p>Findings from a new Pew Research Center survey carried across 27 countries show that views about the performance of democratic systems are decidedly negative in many nations. A median of 51% are dissatisfied with how democracy is working in their country; just 45% are satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>Among the surveyed public, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/2019\/04\/29\/many-across-the-globe-are-dissatisfied-with-how-democracy-is-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research also found<\/a> that most believe elections bring little change, that politicians are corrupt and out of touch and that courts do not treat people fairly. On the other hand, people are more positive about how well their countries protect free expression, provide economic opportunity and ensure public safety.<\/p>\n<p>In 26 nations, unhappiness with the current functioning of democracy is more common among those who believe the statement \u201celected officials care what ordinary people think\u201d does not describe their country well.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21340\" style=\"width: 499px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/2019\/04\/29\/many-across-the-globe-are-dissatisfied-with-how-democracy-is-working\/pg_2019-04-29_global-views-of-democracy_0-01\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21340\" class=\"wp-image-21340 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-05-14-a-las-12.44.00.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-05-14-a-las-12.44.00-200x74.png 200w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-05-14-a-las-12.44.00-300x110.png 300w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-05-14-a-las-12.44.00-400x147.png 400w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-05-14-a-las-12.44.00.png 489w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Pew Research Center<\/p><\/div>\n<h1>A democratic world<\/h1>\n<p>As of the end of 2017, 96 out of 167 countries with populations of at least 500,000 (57%) were democracies of some kind, and only 21 (13%) were autocracies.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the share of democracies among the world\u2019s governments has been on an upward trend since the mid-1970s, and now sits just shy of its post-World War II record (58% in 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Of the countries <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/05\/14\/more-than-half-of-countries-are-democratic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveyed by Pew Research Center<\/a>, Sweden and the Philippines were among those with the highest levels of popular satisfaction with democracy: 69% in each nation said they were satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>People in Mexico, Greece, Brazil and Spain expressed the most dissatisfaction with the state of democracy in their countries.<\/p>\n<h1>Confronting the democracy crisis<\/h1>\n<p>On\u00a0October 19, 2017, former President George W. Bush <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/19\/us\/politics\/george-bush-trump.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave a speech<\/a> about the crisis confronting Western democracies today, he stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cThe great democracies face new and serious threats\u2014yet seem to be losing confidence in their own calling and competence. Economic, political, and national security challenges proliferate, and they are made worse by the tendency to turn inward. The health of the democratic spirit itself is at issue.
