Here are some figures on how viewers are held hostage: each episode of the six that made up Game of Thrones Season 8 cost $15million, and of the 20 million people that watched the series,\u00a0one million-plus were unsatisfied and petitioned for the entire season to be re-edited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">A Washington Post article by\u00a0Steven Zeitchik article summarizes the contenders for the next streaming phenomenon:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Amazon: Jeff\u00a0Bezos has\u00a0reportedly paid over $250 million for the rights to <i>Lord of the Rings<\/i>, though Zeitchik thinks the real game-changer could be its adaptation of\u00a0<i>The Power<\/i>, a fantasy\u00a0novel by Naomi Alderman in which women develop the power to electrocute people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Netflix:\u00a0<i>The Witcher<\/i>, based on a fantasy novel and video game about a monster hunter, is coming this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Showtime\u2019s making\u00a0<i>Halo<\/i>, and Apple\u2019s betting on\u00a0<i>Isaac Asimov\u2019s Foundation<\/i>, though we don\u2019t have many details on either project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 HBO is going back to the well, developing a <i>Game of Thrones<\/i> prequel starring Naomi Watts. The\u00a0prequel may attract plenty of curiosity, but internally the network has high hopes for another show. \u201cDemimonde,\u201d from J.J. Abrams, centers on \u201ca world\u2019s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force,\u201d which also describes several political documentaries currently being shot. Abrams helped create modern event television with \u201cLost,\u201d so expectations are high.\u00a0As for HBO, it\u2019s historically shown the ability to adapt to the marketplace. But now that it\u2019s bent the knee to parent AT&amp;T, the network will be under even more pressure to replicate its success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The level of competition is high.\u00a0Even if one of these shows succeeds, that doesn\u2019t mean perpetual riches. For all its \u201cThrones\u201d spike, HBO Now has seen subscriber numbers drop by as much as 40% within three months of the season\u2019s end. Few are capable of ascending to the Iron Throne.
