{"id":21572,"date":"2019-10-25T11:45:08","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T11:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=21572"},"modified":"2019-10-25T16:57:37","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T16:57:37","slug":"college-degree-widens-gender-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/management-leadership\/college-degree-widens-gender-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"College degree widens gender gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The gender pay gap is wider among men and women with a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>By <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2019\/05\/college-degree-widens-gender-earnings-gap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jennifer Cheeseman Day | U.S. Census Bureau<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Among workers with a bachelor\u2019s degree, women earn 74 cents for every dollar men make, which is less than the 78 cents for workers without the college degree.<\/p>\n<p>While workers with a bachelor\u2019s degree earn about double that of their co-workers without a college education, the difference between men\u2019s and women\u2019s earnings widens with more education.<\/p>\n<p>Age and job choice can affect the size of the pay gap.<\/p>\n<div class=\"uscb-color-primary uscb-layout-row uscb-layout-align-flex-start uscb-text-align-left uscb-margin-T-20\">\n<h1 class=\"uscb-h3\">Age<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<section>\n<div class=\"uscb-text-image-text uscb-text-media-text uscb-padding-LR-0\">\n<p>Women workers with a bachelor\u2019s degree are younger on average and many are years away from the earnings peak usually reached by people in their 50s.<\/p>\n<p>[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=&#8221;show&#8221; ihc_mb_who=&#8221;3,4,5,6&#8243; ihc_mb_template=&#8221;3&#8243; ]<\/p>\n<p>Higher pay reflects years of work experience and pay raises. The earnings differences between men and women also peak in their 50s, although men on average earn more at every age than their female counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Among workers with a bachelor\u2019s degree, women are considerably younger, on average, than men (median ages of 42 vs. 45). In fact, the number of women working full time, year-round with a bachelor\u2019s degree is almost equal to men\u2019s (18 million women and 21 million men).<\/p>\n<p>Women are more likely to have a bachelor\u2019s degree than men (41.7% compared with 36.2%) among full-time, year-round workers. This is particularly true for workers under age 60.<\/p>\n<p>As older educated male workers age out of the labor force, this pattern of the college-educated workforce dominated by women may continue. It provides easy comparisons of median earnings differences by median age for men and women workers by occupation.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s even worse when we look specifically at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.equalpaytoday.org\/equalpaydays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:http:\/\/www.equalpaytoday.org\/equalpaydays\/\">women of color,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/janetnapolitano\/2018\/09\/04\/women-earn-more-college-degrees-and-men-still-earn-more-money\/#5d3e5ad539f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Forbes<\/a>, as Latinas earn 54 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Latino men, while the ratio is 57 cents for Native Americans and 63 cents for African-Americans. In other words, men with the same qualifications and degrees as their female counterparts earn more than women performing the same jobs, across industries and fields, with pitifully few exceptions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21575\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21575\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-200x112.png 200w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-400x225.png 400w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-500x281.png 500w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-600x337.png 600w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-700x394.png 700w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man-768x432.png 768w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/man.png 770w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At this rate, the overall U.S. wage gap won\u2019t close until the year 2059, when today\u2019s newly minted college graduates will be about 62 years old.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"textimage parbase section\">\n<div>\n<section>\n<div class=\"uscb-text-image-text uscb-text-media-text uscb-padding-LR-0\">\n<p><strong>Among the highlights:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In many occupations, the earnings gap doesn\u2019t exist: phlebotomists, electricians, and social workers. This is particularly noticeable when accounting for educational attainment.<\/li>\n<li>Women and men workers concentrate in different occupations<i>.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among full-time, year-round workers, some of the largest occupations for women are secretaries and administrative assistants, registered nurses, and elementary and middle school teachers. For men, the list includes driver\/sales workers and truck drivers, first-line supervisors of retail sales workers, janitor and building cleaners, and construction laborers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All of the largest occupations with over 1 million full-time workers (large circles on the graph) show some degree of earnings gap between men and women. This pattern remains for most of these occupations even when accounting for educational attainment.<\/li>\n<li>Occupations in which men are, on average, older than women have higher earnings on average, compared with occupations in which women are older.<\/li>\n<li>Selecting between the two educational attainment options shows a significant effect of more education on earnings for most occupations, for both men and women.
