{"id":21580,"date":"2019-06-07T14:30:47","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T14:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=21580"},"modified":"2019-06-07T19:45:52","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T19:45:52","slug":"amazons-true-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/opinion\/amazons-true-face\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon&#8217;s True Face?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Shareholder proposals aimed at stymying the company\u2019s future in facial recognition failed at its annual meeting.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Amazon can continue to sell its facial recognition technology, Rekognition, to whomever it pleases\u2014government and law enforcement included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"ES-MX\">Two controversial\u00a0proposals made by shareholders at the company&#8217;s annual meeting would have seen Amazon barred from selling Rekognition to government agencies without first ensuring the protection of civil liberties and guaranteed an independent study of potential privacy\/human rights issues associated with widespread surveillance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Yet\u00a0Amazon\u00a0successfully persuaded shareholders of Rekognition\u2019s \u201cmaterial benefits to both society and organizations.\u201d Google and Microsoft might disagree\u2014they\u2019ve limited the applications of their respective surveillance tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Though the proposals failed, their existence shows that Amazon will be defending the use of its Rekognition technology for years to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The fact that a vote was even held demonstrates that\u00a0shareholders lack confidence in the idea that company executives properly understand or &#8220;are addressing the civil and human rights impacts of their role in facilitating pervasive government surveillance,\u201d said the ACLU\u2019s Shankar Narayan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Amazon\u2019s shareholders aren\u2019t the first to critique surveillance tech as a tool of the \u201c<a id=\"LPlnk118227\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/link.morningbrew.com\/click\/16976403.754789\/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubnl0aW1lcy5jb20vMjAxOS8wNS8yMC90ZWNobm9sb2d5L2FtYXpvbi1mYWNpYWwtcmVjb2duaXRpb24uaHRtbD91dG1fc291cmNlPW1vcm5pbmdfYnJldw\/5cdc138acff06b70ae6e505eB047c05c6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">police state<\/a>.\u201d Remember when San Francisco banned its police department using facial recognition? The issue is a highly divisive one among both citizens and government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Last week, a House Oversight Committee held a hearing on the subject. The verdict? Bipartisanship isn\u2019t dead.
