{"id":21759,"date":"2020-03-10T08:00:13","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T08:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=21759"},"modified":"2020-03-09T23:05:03","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T23:05:03","slug":"working-with-chronic-illness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/ceo-life\/health\/working-with-chronic-illness\/","title":{"rendered":"Working (and living) with chronic illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chronic\u00a0illness may be unpredictable, but it shouldn&#8217;t hold anybody back from getting a job, however, in many states across the US, it does.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chronic illness\u00a0is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/about\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generally defined as<\/a> a condition lasting longer than one year, and more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/series\/sr_10\/sr10_259.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">133 million people in the U.S. have one<\/a>, according to a\u00a0National Health Interview Survey conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/about\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a> in 2012, but as the years go by, numbers have risen.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.milkeninstitute.org\/publications\/view\/910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Milken Institute report<\/a>, U.S. health care costs for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease totaled $1.1 trillion in 2016. When lost economic productivity is included, the total economic impact was $3.7 trillion. This is equivalent to nearly 20 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to chronic disease management,\u00a0Zion Market Research has published that the global\u00a0<u><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/Tracker?data=v6OtRyTLaDxjuy-PVKaPzSTTLCBuLjPV_4YQJ_hpTXaWyPzh7kK_dLmUyZheUu25074ZqwxLcYGacOmHJzeBxaMgzlq17ABKlHKuMGXeRBix4Qs2zB1hdbGnBkWN3SwNax09PAZQs0vXV9N44xekQTHhXUnNXzhtBHr0QcjvyzB3noELhmJkGj-eIuKaIYgL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chronic disease management market<\/a><\/u>\u00a0was valued at approximately USD 3.92 billion in 2018 and is expected to generate around USD 10.3 billion by 2024, at a CAGR of around 17.5% between 2019 and 2024.<\/p>\n<h1>Job opportunities at risk<\/h1>\n<p>As if bearing a condition that adds up everyday was not enough, it turns out that\u00a0it&#8217;s actually complicated to land a job while living in this status. Even more so, it&#8217;s not easy seeing employers offer significant positions to workers with chronic illnesses who might not be able to work a traditional 9-to-5 job.<\/p>\n<p>Living with\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">incurable and ongoing chronic\u00a0can affect a person\u2019s needs and energy\u2014and, therefore, where and how they work, especially in the modern work culture, which puts a high value on maximum productivity, meaning that w<\/span><span class=\"s1\">orking with a chronic illness can leave you facing an impossible choice: your career or your health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chronic diseases are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fightchronicdisease.org\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/GrowingCrisisofChronicDiseaseintheUSfactsheet_81009.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responsible for seven out of every 10 deaths in the U.S.<\/a>, killing more than 1.7 million Americans every year, turning them into\u00a0the most frequent users of health care in the country, accounting for 81% of hospital admissions; 91% of all prescriptions filled; and 76% of all physician visits.<\/p>\n<p>Company-wise, bot\u00a0U.S. employers and employees are paying for the high costs of chronic disease through the increase in health costs associated with greater demand for and use of health care services, for example, healthcare coverage costs for people with a chronic condition average $6,032 annually \u2013 five times higher than for those without such a condition.<\/p>\n<p>The total cost of obesity to U.S. companies is estimated at $13 billion annually. This includes the \u201cextra\u201d cost of health insurance ($8 billion), sick leave ($2.4 billion), life insurance ($1.8 billion), and disability insurance ($1 billion) associated with obesity<\/p>\n<h1>Costing our future<\/h1>\n<p>While today\u2019s situation is grave, the chronic disease crisis looms even larger tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>By 2025, chronic diseases will affect an estimated 164 million Americans \u2013 nearly half (49%) of the population, however, many of these chronic diseases could be prevented, delayed, or alleviated, through simple lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n<p>Advances in medical technology and science are enabling medical treatments scarcely imagined only a few years ago, but work is still to be done, especially in prevention, as it\u2019s always going to be cheaper than treatment \u2014 but changing health-related behaviors is difficult.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re chronically ill, it often feels like doubt rules your life. People doubt that you\u2019re sick. They doubt how hard you\u2019re trying. They doubt that you\u2019ll follow through on your commitments. And eventually, you begin to doubt yourself, but if you live with these conditions, you must remember you are not your chronic illness.
