{"id":22010,"date":"2019-07-10T15:57:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T15:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=22010"},"modified":"2019-07-10T16:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T16:00:00","slug":"resignation-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/news\/resignation-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"<Resignation Mexico>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mexican Finance Minister Carlos Urzua abruptly quits.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"el__leafmedia el__leafmedia--sourced-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">Mexico&#8217;s finance minister, Carlos Urz\u00faa, quit abruptly on Tuesday with a letter of resignation that appeared highly critical of the current administration, and raised questions about the president&#8217;s much-vaunted promise to reduce corruption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">He tweeted a copy of the letter &#8212; addressed to Mexican president Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador &#8212; which suggested that the current administration&#8217;s policymaking was not &#8220;based on evidence&#8221; or &#8220;free of extremism.&#8221; &#8220;There were a lot of discrepancies in economic matters,&#8221; the letter continued to read.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Agradezco la oportunidad de haber podido servir a M\u00e9xico. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aaa2cIa9uI\">pic.twitter.com\/aaa2cIa9uI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Carlos Urz\u00faa (@CarlosM_Urzua) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarlosM_Urzua\/status\/1148626816241979392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>As of now,\u00a0it is yet to see if Lopez Obrador tries to restore investor confidence or if he is willing to take a much riskier gamble on Mexico&#8217;s future now. The left-leaning, anti-establishment President\u00a0also responded on his Facebook page saying that he had accepted Urz\u00faa&#8217;s resignation and proceeded to named undersecretary Arturo Herrera Guti\u00e9rrez to fill the role.<\/p>\n<p>Urz\u00faa is not the first to express doubt about the new president&#8217;s approach to policy; critics have warned that he might have an authoritarian streak and have even compared him to Venezuela&#8217;s former far-left leader Hugo Chavez.<\/p>\n<h2>The first year<\/h2>\n<p>In his first year in office, he has led the country to renegotiate a free trade agreement with the US and Canada, and to placate the United States over migration by stepping up controls at Mexico&#8217;s southern border.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Lopez Obrador vowed to tackle insecurity in a country where more than 70% of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/temas\/indice-global-impunidad-mexico-2018-via-udlap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0crimes go unpunished, and 90% of crimes are not reported due to mistrust of authorities, but murder rates across Mexico are still on the rise and have even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/sesnsp\/acciones-y-programas\/incidencia-delictiva-87005?idiom=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reached<\/a>\u00a0their highest levels on record since 2011 with nearly 3,000 slayings in January alone. In Mexico City alone the murder rate has increased by 100%.<\/p>\n<p>On tackling corruption, the watchdog group<a href=\"https:\/\/contralacorrupcion.mx\/compras-contrataciones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Mexicanos Contra la Corrupcion y la Impunidad<\/a>\u00a0reports rather than securing the lowest price for public projects, AMLO&#8217;s administration has directly awarded more than 70% of the contracts to select companies. To the day, Al Jazeera reports that it&#8217;s not clear how or why they were chosen because there was no formal\u00a0bidding process.<\/p>\n<p>In an economic perspective, investors are wary about Mexico&#8217;s economic future.
