{"id":23220,"date":"2019-10-14T11:00:54","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T11:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=23220"},"modified":"2019-10-14T16:30:27","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T16:30:27","slug":"us-blacklists-chinas-top-ai-startups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/industry\/us-blacklists-chinas-top-ai-startups\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s top AI: To the blacklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US government has blacklisted some of China\u2019s top artificial intelligence startups.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. government has broadened its trade blacklist to include some of China\u2019s top artificial intelligence startups, ostensibly with a view to punishing Beijing for its treatment of Muslim minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the move is sure to increase tensions ahead of high-level trade talks in Washington this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision, heavily criticized by Beijing, targets 20 Chinese public security bureaus and eight companies, including video surveillance firm Hikvision, as well as leaders in facial recognition technology, namely SenseTime Group Ltd and Megvii Technology Ltd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The action prohibits the listed companies and bureaus from buying components from U.S. companies without government approval. It comes on the heels of measures taken by Washington to limit the influence of Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] on grounds of national security threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. officials denied that the action was related to this week\u2019s resumption of trade talks, but the move indicates that the 15-month trade war between the world\u2019s two largest economies is far from over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Department of Commerce stated that the \u201c(blacklisted) entities have been implicated in human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China\u2019s campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross added: \u201cThe U.S. Government and Department of Commerce cannot and will not tolerate the brutal suppression of ethnic minorities within China.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beijing responded publicly that the United States should stop interfering in its affairs. Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told the media that China will continue to take a firm and resolute stance with regards to protecting its sovereign security<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>The companies affected<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hikvision, with a market value of about $42 billion, claims to be the world\u2019s largest maker of video surveillance equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SenseTime, valued at around $4.5 billion, is one of the world\u2019s most valuable AI unicorns, while Megvii, backed by e-commerce giant Alibaba, is valued in the region of $4 billion and is preparing an IPO to raise at least $500 million in Hong Kong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other firms on the list are speech recognition firm iFlytek Co, surveillance equipment maker Zhejiang Dahua Technology, data recovery firm Xiamen Meiya Pico Information Co, facial recognition firm Yitu Technology and Yixin Science and Technology Co.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A U.S. Hikvision spokesman said the company \u201cstrongly opposes\u201d the decision and stated that earlier this year it recruited a human rights specialist and former U.S. ambassador to advise the company on human rights compliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPunishing Hikvision, despite these engagements, will deter global companies from communicating with the U.S. government, hurt Hikvision\u2019s U.S. businesses partners and negatively impact the U.S. economy,\u201d the company added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The much-publicized blacklisting of Huawei has hurt many of its U.S.-based suppliers that depended on the world\u2019s largest telecommunications company for revenue and has made it difficult for Huawei to sell new products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, the Trump administration also released an interim rule prohibiting federal purchases of telecommunications equipment from five Chinese companies, including Huawei and Hikvision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huawei has repeatedly denied it is controlled by the Chinese government, military or intelligence services, and has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US government has blacklisted some of China\u2019s top artificial  [&#8230;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":21,"featured_media":23222,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1069,45],"tags":[2761,2763,99,98,1385,2760,1011,2762],"class_list":["post-23220","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-editors-choice","category-industry","tag-ai-startups","tag-artificial-intelligence-startups","tag-ceo","tag-ceo-north-america","tag-ceo-northam","tag-hikvision","tag-paul-imison","tag-us-blacklists-chinas-top-ai-startups"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23220","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/21"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=23220"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23220\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":23280,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23220\/revisions\/23280"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/23222"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=23220"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=23220"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=23220"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
