America celebrates its 399th Thanksgiving, and\u00a0here’s a breakdown at the holiday in numbers.<\/p>\n

According to the United States Census Bureau, Thanksgiving\u00a0became a national holiday on Oct. 3, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November as a national day of thanksgiving. Decades later, President Franklin Roosevelt officially declared that Thanksgiving should always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month to encourage earlier holiday shopping.<\/p>\n

Since then, the legacy of thanks and the feast have survived centuries, and in 2019,\u00a0America celebrates its 399th Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

To understand more about this holiday, which began in the\u00a0Fall 1621 in Plymouth\u00a0when the Massachusetts Governor William Bradford planned a festival to give thanks for around 90 Native Americans, here’s a look at Thanksgiving Day numbers:<\/p>\n

  2. USDA projects<\/a>\u00a0that 240 million turkeys will be raised in the United States in 2019.<\/li>\n
  3. President Harry S. Truman started the tradition of receiving\u00a0a turkey at the White House a few days before Thanksgiving.\u00a0President George H. W. Bush\u00a0was the first to pardon the bird and not eat it.<\/li>\n
  4. Seven U.S. cities share the name of\u00a0the centerpiece of most Thanksgiving meals<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the turkey.<\/li>\n
  5. Five places in the U.S.<\/a> are\u00a0named after the popular Thanksgiving side dish of cranberries.<\/a><\/li>\n
  6. Multigenerational households, those with three or more generations,\u00a0numbered 4.6 million<\/a>\u00a0in 2018. The highest concentration is in California.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
