Drawing on Mexico\u2019s history and heritage, Joya\u0300<\/a> tells the story of an alchemist and his granddaughter embarking on a quest to uncover the secrets of life.<\/p>\n

We say \u201cexperience\u201d because this is not a show that you just co- me to watch. This is a spectacular for all five senses that has been thoughtfully created so that viewers can experience the Riviera Maya\u2019s natural beauty and a performance by one of the world top entertainment companies at the same time.<\/p>\n

The show was created specifically for its location and is both the only permanent show outside the United States and the first foray into Mexico by Cirque du Soleil.<\/p>\n

The experience begins with the spectacular walk into the beautifully landscaped Cirque du Soleil property. The theater, covered walkways, and outdoor restaurant and bar all sit around a cenote with waterfalls in the background. As the assistant walks around the cenote on the walkway, the spectator has the option to visit the Nektar Restaurant, a Yucatecan eatery that is also open to the general public.<\/p>\n

The storyline of the show involves a grandfather who has a book of knowledge that he wants to pass on to someone in his family. He has a granddaughter named Joya\u0300 who is young and reckless but comes to know her grandfather\u2019s work. Many aspects of the show, like the migration of the monarch butterflies, were specifically included to reflect Mexican culture.<\/p>\n

For example, the design of the main stage was inspired by the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City (UNAM) which has one of the most extensive libraries in the world with about 400,000 books. The stage acts as a library with all sizes of books that move around during the show.<\/p>\n

The show and set alike were created by Cirque\u2019s expert design team who spent time traveling Mexico prior to starting work with a view to gathering ideas for cultural elements to incorporate into this unique Riviera Maya-themed production.<\/p>\n
