{"id":24618,"date":"2020-02-24T16:00:27","date_gmt":"2020-02-24T16:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=24618"},"modified":"2020-02-24T22:03:18","modified_gmt":"2020-02-24T22:03:18","slug":"new-heights-for-the-youth-media-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/ceo-life\/art-culture\/new-heights-for-the-youth-media-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"New heights for the Youth Media Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Kid becomes the first-ever graphic novel to win the Newbery Medal.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On January 27th, the American Library Association (ALA) announced\u00a0the\u00a0Youth Media Awards at the Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>There, the organization made public the top books, video, and audio books for children and young adults that\u00a0encourage original and creative work in the field of children\u2019s and young adult literature and media.\u00a0And in the edition of 2020, a graphic novel won the John Newbery Medal for the first time in its nearly 100-year history, the title was Jerry Craft\u2019s,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?reviewDetail=new-kid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New Kid<\/em><\/a>, illustrated by the author and published by HarperCollins Children\u2019s Books, a division of HarperCollins Publishers.\u00a0The John Newbery Medal is given to &#8220;the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children&#8221; by\u00a0the\u00a0Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/mediapresscenter\/presskits\/youthmediaawards\/alayouthmediaawards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The\u00a0ALA Youth Media Awards<\/a>,\u00a0also include the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards, which are chosen among committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alsc\/awardsgrants\/bookmedia\/newberymedal\/newberymedal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were given to other titles<\/a> like\u00a0<em>The Undefeated,\u00a0<\/em>by Kwame Alexander,\u00a0<em>Dig,<\/em>\u00a0by A. S. King,\u00a0<em>The Night Diary<\/em>, by Veera Hiranandani,\u00a0<em>The Book of Boy<\/em>, by Catherine Gilbert Murdock and\u00a0<em>Merci Su\u00e1rez Changes Gears,<\/em>\u00a0written by Meg Medina, among others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoollibraryjournal.com\/?detailStory=jerry-craft-new-kid-wins-newbery-kadir-nelson-earns-caldecott-for-the-undefeated-at-youth-media-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to School Library Journal<\/a>, graphic novels had been named Newbery Honor titles in the past with Cece Bell&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?detailStory=review-of-the-day-el-deafo-by-cece-bell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>El Deafo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2015 and Victoria Jamieson&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?reviewDetail=roller-girl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Roller Girl<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2016, but this is the first win\u00a0for a graphic novel. Mariko and Jillian Tamaki&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slj.com\/?reviewDetail=this-one-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>This One Summer<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was a Caldecott Honor
