Except that&#8217;s\u00a0not happening\u00a0because the growing coronavirus crisis, which is believed to have started in the city of Wuhan, has put a sudden stop to proceedings, and for China\u2019s growing tourism industry, it\u2019s terrible timing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1790775\/coronavirus-has-struck-at-the-worst-time-for-chinese-tourism\/?utm_source=morning_brew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quartz reports<\/a> that airlines such as\u00a0China Southern Airlines,\u00a0China Eastern Airlines, and Air China have been ordered by the country\u2019s government to cancel flights to and from Wuhan and give prospective passengers full\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.caac.gov.cn\/XWZX\/MHYW\/202001\/t20200121_200535.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refunds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a1dbe\">Last year, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.cn\/shuju\/2019-02\/10\/content_5364666.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism<\/a>, tourism revenue hit 513.9 billion yuan ($78 billion) during the week of the festival, an increase of 8.2% year-on-year. More than 40% of tourists visited museums and galleries, while more than one in three attended a \u201ccultural performance,\u201d but this year, as an echo to the coronavirus epidemic spreading, many of the same attractions are closed or cancelled, like Shanghai\u2019s Disney park, which was so full last Lunar New Year that it had to stop selling tickets.
