But as the first mover&#8217;s growth slows, its main competitor Lyft will increasingly claim market share.<\/p>\n<p>We estimate that 74.5% of transportation-sharing users in the US will use Uber in 2020, compared with 54.0% who will use Lyft. Over the next three years, Lyft will continue to grow its share of transportation-sharing users at faster rates than those of Uber, according to our latest forecasting report, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/us-sharing-economy-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics=\"Article-Link-Click-https:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/content\/us-sharing-economy-2020\">US Sharing Economy 2020<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2023, Lyft\u2019s share of transportation-sharing users will reach 59.0%, less than 13 percentage points behind Uber.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e-66x66.png 66w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e-100x100.png 100w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e-200x197.png 200w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e-300x296.png 300w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e-400x394.png 400w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/e.png 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both Uber and Lyft continue to benefit from being first to market in the ride-sharing industry. But Uber has a considerably larger number of users, giving it less room to grow. We expect Uber will have 63.3 million US users in 2020, growing 9.7% over 2019. Lyft will have 45.9 million US users, up 23.7%.<\/p>\n<section class=\"cb-widget-row\">\n<div class=\"cb-widget-row_content\">\n<div class=\"cb-widget spec_text_widget\">\n<p>In the past two years, Uber and Lyft dealt with similar challenges. Both companies have been criticized for not having a clear path to profitability. Both had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/04\/investing\/uber-lyft-ipo-market\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics=\"Article-Link-Click-https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/04\/investing\/uber-lyft-ipo-market\/index.html\">less-than-stellar debuts on Wall Street<\/a>. (Lyft went public in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/29\/lyft-ipo-stock-starts-trading-on-public-market.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics=\"Article-Link-Click-https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/29\/lyft-ipo-stock-starts-trading-on-public-market.html\">March 2019<\/a>, with Uber following in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/10\/uber-ipo-stock-starts-trading-on-the-new-york-stock-exchange.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics=\"Article-Link-Click-https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/10\/uber-ipo-stock-starts-trading-on-the-new-york-stock-exchange.html\">May<\/a>.) And both faced\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/uber-reveals-widespread-sexual-assault-problem-including-hundreds-reports-rape-n1096411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-analytics=\"Article-Link-Click-https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/uber-reveals-widespread-sexual-assault-problem-including-hundreds-reports-rape-n1096411\">negative publicity<\/a>\u00a0around lawsuits from riders alleging they were sexually assaulted by drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Uber and Lyft have continued to add users despite these roadblocks and have made transportation-sharing the key driver of the US sharing economy.<\/p>\n<p>Transportation-sharing is also benefiting from secular growth toward &#8220;Transportation as a Service&#8221; (TaaS), as some users are moving away from car ownership.
