2019 was a record year for internet crime losses in the United States.<\/p>\n

No, not 1981, which statistically was the most dangerous year in New York City\u2019s history<\/a>\u00a0due to car thefts and more than\u00a02,100 murders, we refer to 2019, which proved to be the biggest year for Internet crime yet, as the\u00a02019 Internet Crime Report<\/a>\u00a0found over 467,00 complaints logged by IC3 in the last calendar year – 1,300 per day on average.<\/p>\n

These complaints recorded more than $3.5 billion in losses to individual and business victims,\u00a0an increase on the $2.7 billion lost in 2018.<\/p>\n

Aside from\u00a0attack vectors to smartphones and unsafe browsing (phishing, spear phishing, malware), the FBI reports that business email compromise or email account compromise, has been a major concern for years, as the FBI\u2019s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) recorded 23,775 complaints from business email compromise during last year, which resulted in more than $1.7 billion in losses alone.<\/p>\n

Donna Gregory, the chief of IC3, stated that although\u00a0the FBI did not see an increase in new types of fraud, the costliest complaints of the past year involved business email compromise,\u00a0romance or confidence fraud<\/a>\u00a0and spoofing or mimicking the accounts of people or vendors, meaning criminals are\u00a0getting sophisticated and evolving the way they approach their interests and targets.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is getting harder and harder for victims to spot the red flags and tell real from fake,\u201d she added<\/strong>, \u201cYou may get a text message that appears to be your bank asking you to verify information on your account or you may even search a service online and inadvertently end up on a fraudulent site that gathers your bank or credit card information (…)\u00a0\u201cIn the same way your bank and online accounts have started to require two-factor authentication\u2014apply that to your life,\u201d Gregory emphasized<\/strong>. \u201cVerify requests in person or by phone, double check web and email addresses, and don\u2019t follow the links provided in any messages.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
