This is the first time Google has canceled an I\/O event, its flagship developer conference, since its first edition in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0I\/O developer event is regularly used\u00a0to introduce new changes and updates to Android, Google-powered hardware, and services like Google Maps, but as concerns around the coronavirus continue to reveal themselves around the world, Google has begun exploring new ways to connect with its developer community. Through a statement, the tech company has said that attendees will be refunded in full by March 13th, and those who purchased tickets for this year\u2019s event will be automatically granted the option of buying a Google I\/O 2021 ticket.<\/p>\n<p>To make up for the economic impact of canceling the event, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/03\/03\/google-cancels-its-2020-i-o-developer-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TechCrunch reports<\/a> that Google is pledging $1 million to local Mountain View organizations to support small businesses and increase STEM and computer science opportunities in Mountain View schools. For further doubts, Google asks customers and the general piblic to please contact <a href=\"mailto:io@google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">io@google.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other tech events have also canceled due to the virus concerns, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/2\/12\/21127754\/mwc-2020-canceled-coronavirus-trade-show-phone-mobile-world-congress-gsma-statement\">Mobile World Congress<\/a>\u00a0of last month, which was scheduled to happen this week in Barcelona, followed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/2\/27\/21156308\/facebook-f8-developer-conference-cancelled-coronavirus-concern-covid-19\">Facebook\u2019s F8 developer conference<\/a>\u00a0in San Jose, California, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/2\/28\/21156037\/gdc-2020-canceled-coronavirus-gaming-event-san-francisco\">Game Developer Conference,<\/a>\u00a0the world\u2019s largest mobile trade show.
