Well: between January 24 and February 23, when the Chinese New Year was being celebrated, just $4.2 million worth of tickets were sold, according to figures\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/film-industry-facing-5-billion-loss-coronavirus-outbreak-1282038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/film-industry-facing-5-billion-loss-coronavirus-outbreak-1282038&quot;}\">published<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u00a0this week. During the same time frame last year, ticket revenue hit $1.76\u00a0<em>billion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chinese theaters have been closed for weeks, thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. Theaters in Japan, South Korea, and Italy\u2014three other major centers of coronavirus outbreak\u2014are showing huge attendance drop-offs as well. All told, experts estimated the film industry could lose $5 billion as a result of the virus and its fallout, according to the\u00a0<em>Hollywood Reporter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still, the long-term ramifications of the illness might not be as dire as that figure makes them sound, one expert told\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--in-content\">\n<div class=\"ad__slot ad__slot--in-content\">\u201cIf theaters are closed, it\u2019s obvious there&#8217;s going to be an impact,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Paul Dergarabedian<\/strong>, senior media analyst for Comscore, said on Tuesday. \u201cBut at some point, this crisis will clear, and the movies will most certainly be released. At that point, I think there will be a pent-up demand. If you\u2019ve been sequestered indoors for weeks or even months, once there is some kind of normalcy restored, I think there\u2019s going to be an intense interest in these outside-the-home activities.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As Hollywood studios clamor to collect intellectual property with four-quadrant appeal, a greater emphasis has been placed on how films perform at the international box office. (\u201cIt\u2019s just a movie,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThe health and well-being of fans around the world, and their families, is more important. We have all waited over four years for this film. Another few months will not damage the quality of the film and only help the box-office for Daniel Craig\u2019s final hurrah.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Despite being brought low by the unexpected coronavirus outbreak, then, it seems unlikely studio executives will change how they do business going forward\u2014at least, according to Dergarabedian.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere is now an awareness of what can happen in this situation. The playbook is being written right now. I don&#8217;t know that there are any contingency plans that were in place before this,\u201d <strong>he said<\/strong>. \u201cBut going forward, everyone will have this in the back of their mind that things like this can happen and you have to get creative in how to deal with this type of situation. I don&#8217;t think it\u2019s going to be the main consideration whether or not studios green-light a movie that has international appeal, but it has created the idea that if something like this happens, what do you do? The movies have always provided an escape.
