Disneyland\u00a0announced that it would close its gates on Saturday through the end of the month.<\/p>\n

The Disneyland Resort,\u00a0one of California’s largest employers, with 31,000 workers,\u00a0announced through a statement<\/a> that it will temporarily close beginning on Saturday, March 14, 2020\u00a0in response to the coronavirus outbreak in California.<\/p>\n

The statement added that hotels at the Disneyland resort would remain open until Monday to allow guests to make travel arrangements and that Downtown Disney would remain open.<\/p>\n

According to Brooks Barnes, Hollywood reporter for the New York Times since 2007, this is\u00a0the fourth time in the park’s history<\/a>\u00a0that operations have been fully suspended, and the first time since 9\/11. Before that, it had closed after the 6.7 1994\u00a0Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles and on the national day of mourning after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom and state health officials urged\u00a0canceling large gatherings of more than 250 people\u00a0until at least the end of March, per Business Insider.\u00a0The\u00a0California health officials’ guidance says<\/a>\u00a0gatherings like concerts, conferences, and sporting events “should be postponed or canceled” across the state.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a02019 California State University-Fullerton study commissioned by Disney’s parks division,<\/a>\u00a0Disneyland had an economic impact of $8.5 billion dollars for the state, which could have made a case for keeping the theme park open, but, with an\u00a0average of 50,000 visitors a day<\/a>\u00a0sprawling across nearly 100 acres of park, Disneyland seems to blow way past state health officials’ descriptions of large gatherings.<\/p>\n

USA Today reported<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0Tokyo Disneyland also closed on Wednesday amid the pandemic.<\/p>\n
