President Donald Trump has indicated many\u00a0states\u00a0can\u00a0reopen\u00a0by May 1.\u00a0Here’s the latest on where some stand in their plans to reopen.<\/p>\n

The coronavirus pandemic continues to upend life as we know it. According to CNN,\u00a0more than\u00a071,000<\/a>\u00a0Americans have died<\/a>, millions have filed for unemployment, and worries for the economy and people’s mental health is an urgent matter, nevertheless, some states are planning on reopening\u00a0their economies and getting their people back to work with safety measures.<\/p>\n

Much is at stake in the reopenings, experts say, warning that reopening too soon could lead to a devastating second wave, per The New York Times<\/a>, the\u00a0tensions between urban and rural areas and apprehensions from business owners and the public, for example.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s clearly a life-or-death-sort-of-level decision,\u201d said Dr. Larry Chang, an infectious-diseases specialist at Johns Hopkins University. \u201cIf you get this wrong, many more people will die. It\u2019s as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to CNBC<\/a>, states in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast have formed coalitions to usher in a regional recovery. Other states have faced criticism for already allowing nonessential businesses to resume in-person operations. Some governors have yet to release any sort of reopening plan, but the truth is that this reopening process will happen much more slowly than any of us would like.<\/p>\n

President Trump unveiled a three-phased approach based on the advice of public health experts\u00a0named “Opening Up America Again.”<\/a> Among the guidelines, it is written that states shouldn’t start to reopen until they have a downward trajectory of positive cases in a 14-day period or a “downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total tests within a 14-day period.”\u00a0It would be smart for states to meet those guidelines first, said infectious disease expert Dr. Carlos del Rio, a professor of medicine and global health at Emory University, to CNN<\/a>. Otherwise, they risk a second wave of increased infections and deaths that could overwhelm hospitals and hit more Americans with\u00a0expensive medical bills.<\/p>\n

It’s a gamble playing out across the country, and the stakes are unknown, writes Holly Yan for CNN<\/a>.\u00a0“It will be at least two to three weeks before we see an increase in the number of infections because it takes time for individuals to infect others and for them to display symptoms,” said data scientist Youyang Gu, whose\u00a0coronavirus projection model\u00a0is\u00a0cited by the CDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Green:\u00a0<\/strong>Green means go…with extreme caution. Governments have allowed many nonessential businesses to reopen (with heavy restrictions) in these states.<\/p>\n

Yellow:\u00a0<\/strong>Restrictions will start to ease in the next week or two.<\/p>\n

Blue:<\/strong>\u00a0Broader reopenings have a slightly longer timeline than the yellow states, but there’s movement and already some easing of lockdowns.<\/p>\n

Gray:\u00a0<\/strong>These states are still watching, waiting before putting more aggressive opening plans into place.<\/p>\n
