Similarly, almost two-thirds (65%) agreed that how well a brand responds in a crisis will have a huge impact on their likelihood of buying that brand in the future. More than a quarter (26%) said they started using a new brand based on its actions during COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8-200x229.png 200w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8-262x300.png 262w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8-400x459.png 400w, http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8.png 470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/p>\n<section class=\"cb-widget-row\">\n<div class=\"cb-widget-row_content\">\n<div class=\"cb-widget spec_text_widget\">\n<p>Several agency executives emphasized the heightened scrutiny on brand messaging during the pandemic. \u201cBrands should be conscious of the purpose and the value of offers during this time,\u201d said Caroline Moul, president of PHD Canada. \u201cConsumers want to know that a brand stands for something. They don&#8217;t want a brand to be opportunistic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dustin Rideout, chief strategy officer at Juniper Park\\TBWA, said that brands \u201cneed to consider not just how to participate with a message during this time, but how to communicate coming out of the crisis. In a response period, which is what we&#8217;re in at the moment, brands should aim to provide clarity and utility\u2014that&#8217;s what people need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edelman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics=\"Article-Link-Click-https:\/\/www.edelman.com\/\">Edelman<\/a>\u00a0asked adults in Canada how they preferred to hear from brands about their COVID-19 response, email topped the list at 54%, presumably because it indicates an opt-in to brand communications. Traditional media formats\u2014TV, radio and newspapers\u2014ranked second at 39%, followed by a brand\u2019s website (36%). Social media, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, trailed more conventional media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"cb-widget-row\">\n<div class=\"cb-widget-row_content\">\n<figure class=\"cb-widget cb-widget-chart spec_chart_widget\">\n<div class=\"cb-widget-chart_inner-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"cb-widget-chart_image-front aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/contentstorage-nax2.emarketer.com\/fa149064b909c53acc488f80e93a307e\/255131\" alt=\"What Methods Would Adults in Canada Prefer Brands to Use When Communicating About the Coronavirus and Their Response to the Pandemic? (% of respondents, March 2020)\" \/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cb-widget-row_aside\">Some brands may have to rethink entire campaigns to avoid seeming insensitive or out of touch with the current reality. \u201cWe had to point out to a brand recently that the campaign they had in market just didn&#8217;t play well right now,&#8221; said Shawn Lowe, vice president of growth and partnerships at Halifax-based Time + Space Media. \u201cIt could have offended some Canadians. We made recommendations to reevaluate their creative.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"cb-widget-row_aside\">One large toy manufacturer scrapped its existing spring campaign on TV and digital video that was specific to toys for March break and outdoor activities. \u201cWith COVID-19, they canceled the planned campaign and pivoted to support retailers,\u201d said Fil Lourenco, vice president of digital at Havas Media Canada. \u201cAs a manufacturer, they don\u2019t have an ecommerce presence, so we adjusted strategy to drive directly to retailers. We also adjusted the product mix to be more reflective of what parents are looking for now\u2014family games, puzzles and educational.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Other key findings from the Edelman trust study included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>93% of respondents in Canada expected brands to partner with government and relief agencies to address the crisis.<\/li>\n<li>89% wanted to hear how brands support and protect their employees and customers.<\/li>\n<li>91% believed that brands should shift to producing products that help meet current challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where feasible, brands are retooling to make goods that are in high demand during the pandemic. This includes distilleries across the country that are making hand sanitizers and textile manufacturers that are producing personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA help message is not wrong, but it\u2019s better backed up with evidence of the assistance you are providing,\u201d Rideout said. \u201cIs what you&#8217;re doing essential?
