In\u00a01971-72, the team had already tried to change its name,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/dc-sports-bog\/wp\/2014\/06\/03\/the-great-redskins-name-debate-of-1972\/?arc404=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post&#8217;s Dan Steinberg documented<\/a>. With\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/sports\/1992\/01\/27\/protest-of-redskins-draws-2000-at-stadium\/39e3ab8d-791f-4531-98ee-e11d7acceb66\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests in 1992<\/a>\u00a0and lawsuits in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/CRIME\/11\/16\/scotus.redskins\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1999 and 2009<\/a>,\u00a0Native American groups have not stopped to push the team into looking into a new identity, now, it seems that is inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Redskins have announced\u00a0plans\u00a0to review its name, and giant retailers responded with Nike,\u00a0Walmart, Target and Amazon pulling team products from its website and stores. As of Nike, its\u2019s been one of apparel\u2019s most vocal advocates for racial justice, so once it received some pressure, taking a stance probably wasn&#8217;t a difficult decision.\u00a0Walmart\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WalmartInc\/status\/1279141523867734016?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"60\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0it had begun removing the team gear: &#8220;We are discontinuing the sale of items that reference the team&#8217;s name and logo.&#8221;\u00a0Target confirmed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/target-walmart-pull-washington-redskins-merchandise-from-online-stores-51594053993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"80\">Barron&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0that it removed Redskins merchandise from its website, as well.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brand-marketing\/investors-ask-nike-fedex-and-pepsico-to-end-relationships-with-the-washington-redskins\/\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"80\">According to Mary Emily O&#8217;Hara of Adweek<\/a>, with reporting from Business Insider, Nike was\u00a0one of three companies, alongside FedEx and Pepsi, to have sent letters by investors\u00a0asking them to cut ties with Daniel Snyder&#8217;s team\u00a0until it changed its name.\u00a0FedEx, which has naming rights to the team&#8217;s\u00a082,000-seat stadium since 1999 under a $205 million deal that runs until 2025, was among several sponsors to request last week that the team change its name.\u00a0&#8220;We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name,&#8221; a company statement read, per<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-53276070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"80\">\u00a0the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/personal-finance\/022315\/5-mostvaluable-nfl-franchises.asp#:~:text=March%206%2C%202020.-,The%20New%20York%20Times.,%22%20Accessed%20March%206%2C%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Investopedia<\/a>, the team ranks seventh among the most valuable NFL teams in 2019 with a value of $3.4 billion, increasing by 10% from 2018. Owner Dan Snyder, who paid $800 million for the team and its stadium, marking it the most expensive sporting team\u00a0transaction\u00a0in history at the time, has delayed for years the calls to change the team name, but as the conversation around racism reaches a crescendo, it looks like he\u2019s finally backing down.
