Citigroup named\u00a0Jane Fraser\u00a0as its next CEO.<\/p>\n

Jane\u00a0Fraser,\u00a0a 16-year veteran of the bank, currently in charge of\u00a0Citi’s\u00a0consumer bank, is set to take on the role of chief executive in February for Michael Corbat, who\u00a0plans to retire after 37 years\u00a0at the bank, thus becoming\u00a0the first woman to lead a major US bank.\u00a0The move follows a handful of high profile departures at the bank, Forbes reports<\/a>, including former president\u00a0Jamie Forese\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n

According to CNN Business<\/a>, before taking over Citi’s consumer bank, Fraser led the bank’s Latin America division as well as its corporate strategy and M&A group. Fraser also led Citi’s Private Bank from 2009 to 2013. Before joining Citi, Fraser worked at consulting giant McKinsey and in the M&A department of\u00a0Goldman Sachs.\u00a0Fraser will join a\u00a0record-high number<\/a>\u00a0of women leading Fortune 500 companies. In recent months,\u00a0Clorox,\u00a0Coty,\u00a0Gap\u00a0and\u00a0UPS named female CEOs. Still, less than 10% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women and only three are women of color.\u00a0Citi has lost one-third of its market value this year, lagging not just the S&P 500 but rivals including JPMorgan and\u00a0Bank of America.\u00a0Shares of Citi have fallen 35% this year,\u00a0while Bank of America\u2019s are down 26% and Wells Fargo\u2019s have lost 54%.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe Jane is the right person to build on Mike\u2019s record and take Citi to the next level,\u201d Citi\u2019s chairman John Dugan said in a statement. \u201cShe has deep experience across our lines of business and regions and we are highly confident in her.\u201d<\/p>\n
