{"id":27593,"date":"2020-10-30T08:00:14","date_gmt":"2020-10-30T08:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=27593"},"modified":"2020-10-30T18:21:57","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T18:21:57","slug":"office-work-could-be-changed-forever-by-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/innovation-business\/office-work-could-be-changed-forever-by-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Office work could be changed forever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ramifications of the months-long pandemic include everything from how workplaces are run to where we live\u2014and whether the small business that surround office buildings survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only a small fraction of employees who took up home office during the COVID-19 pandemic have returned to full-time work, and that has ramifications for everything from how workplaces are run\u00a0to\u00a0where we live\u2014and whether the small businesses that surround\u00a0office buildings\u00a0survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 75% of the 3.4 million Canadians who began working from home at the outset of the crisis were still working remotely in August, according to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/200904\/dq200904a-eng.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labour Force Survey data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0released by Statistics Canada on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another survey\u00a0suggests that those employees are happy with this new arrangement\u2014many say they would like to continue working from home indefinitely.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maru\/Blue on behalf of ADP Canada\u00a0found that 45% of survey respondents\u00a0would prefer to work remotely at least three days a week. Another 15%\u00a0would like\u00a0to work remotely one or two days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of infection was a key factor in the views expressed by respondents. Of the 12% who said they were anxious about returning to their former work locations, 56% said it was because they were worried about contracting the coronavirus. Another 13% said they didn&#8217;t know how they could meet their family responsibilities while working away from home\u2014things like caring for elderly family members or children whose schools could close at any moment.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young people were more likely to believe that the tide is turning permanently in favor of flexible work. Forty-four per cent of respondents aged\u00a018 to 34 said they believe their employers will implement more flexible policies\u00a0within the next five years, including flextime and remote work; 28% said they believe most people will work remotely by then.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Winners and losers<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The above is great news for businesses and individuals that are able to cut costs while remaining gainfully employed. Yet it is devastating for those businesses that are built up around workplaces\u2014from the stationers and dry cleaners in the lower levels of office buildings to the pubs where people eat lunch or go for a drink after work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, many believe that office numbers won&#8217;t return to previous levels any time in the near future.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Brine, interim chief talent officer\u00a0of accounting firm\u00a0KPMG Canada, recently told CBC that the company will be bringing a maximum of just 20% of its 8,000 workers back to their offices across the country in the coming months.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, some Canadians are concluding that if they don&#8217;t need to work downtown, they may not want to live there, either, which will likewise have a knock on effect on the \u201cecosystem\u201d of businesses in such neighborhoods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, it is an exciting time for the future of work if you are an employee who finds it more comfortable\u2014and convenient\u2014working from home than traveling to the office.
