NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new restrictions on businesses and social events.<\/p>\n

The pandemic has been truly hard, but some could say that New York City has seen tougher days as any.<\/p>\n

The New York Post reported<\/a> that\u00a0Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced\u00a0on Wednesday new restrictions on businesses and social events on Staten Island and imposed a 10 pm curfew on restaurants, bars and gyms statewide in response to a significant uptick in coronavirus infections. Additionally, Cuomo announced a new 10-person cap on parties and other gatherings in private residences, including apartments and houses.<\/p>\n

A rough time<\/h1>\n

The New York Times\u00a0estimated<\/a>\u00a0in August that 2,800 small businesses had closed in New York City since March 1, a third of which were restaurants and bars, according to data it gleaned from Yelp.\u00a0In April, the New York State Restaurant Association predicted that as many as 11 percent of the state\u2019s restaurants and bars could close by the end of that month, totaling roughly 5,500 establishments<\/p>\n

As a responde to seeing lots of restaurants quietly closing in the city, a program called Open Restaurants<\/a> was installed in June<\/a>, which allowed more than 10,300 restaurants to spill outside onto sidewalks, streets, and public spaces previously not available to them. It was supposed to sunset at the end of October, but the city considers it an invaluable lifeline to the battered sector. Now, as COVID-19 is relentless across the country,\u00a0Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that outside dining will continue across the Big Apple, but while outdoor dining is relatively simple in the summer, it\u2019s a logistical nightmare in the winter in the city where the supply of heat lamps is low and legal barriers around heaters for commercial use remain unresolved. Morning Brew writes that some are getting creative, with places like Caf\u00e9 du Soleil, in\u00a0the Upper West Side of Manhattan, who installed 18 geodesic tents, or \u201cspace bubbles<\/a>,\u201d to help block winter elements from pelting patrons as they enjoy some antipasti, however, most establishments don\u2019t have the resources to go all out like that.<\/p>\n

According to NY Eater<\/a>, without more federal aid or long-term solutions for the beleaguered hospitality industry \u2014 including\u00a0the $120 billion bill\u00a0to support independent restaurants \u2014 many closures are likely in store. \u201cWith each new phase of reopening, we\u2019ve been looking for light at the end of the tunnel, but there\u2019s no phase five,\u201d says Kwong of Pearl River Mart. \u201cWe\u2019ve hit the end of the road.\u201d Indoor dining resumes at 25% capacity on September 30.
