{"id":27989,"date":"2020-10-29T16:37:21","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T16:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=27989"},"modified":"2020-10-29T16:37:50","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T16:37:50","slug":"canada-catches-second-coronavirus-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/innovation-business\/canada-catches-second-coronavirus-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada catches second coronavirus wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadians believed their country had succeeded in flattening the COVID curve, but it may now be experiencing a second wave despite holding out<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0better than many others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At summer\u2019s end<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Canadians were riding high on the belief that they had crushed the coronavirus curve even as COVID-19 infections in the US spiked to new highs.\u00a0Then\u00a0the fall arrived,\u00a0and coronavirus case numbers in Canada also began to surge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, the EU removed Canadians from its list of approved travelers in response. Canada must thus face an uncomfortable fact: while the country is still\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/world\/coronavirus-maps.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faring better than many others<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it has lost its widely held image as a nation that had successfully navigated the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By June, Canada had received a big vote of confidence when the EU\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/european-union-travel-list-1.5632422\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placed the country on a\u00a0list of just 14 countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0whose citizens EU officials\u00a0recommended should be welcome in the 27-nation bloc.\u00a0Many European destinations subsequently flung open their doors to Canadian travelers\u2014with no restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU\u2019s recent change of heart isn\u2019t surprising, however, as Canada currently appears to be enduring a second coronavirus wave.\u00a0Over the past month, COVID-19 infections in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta have soared to record highs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts have cited a myriad of reasons why the numbers are climbing. First, there was the inevitable rise in cases as provinces eased lockdown restrictions over the spring and summer. Also, some provinces struggled to keep up contact tracing and testing as infections began to mount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada is still faring better than Europe. Infections are surging\u00a0in many EU countries including\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/europe-covid-19-second-wave-lockdown-1.5765404\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France, which last week declared a state of emergency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.reuters.com\/article\/idUSE8N2BG02K\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Spain became the first Western European country to surpass a million cumulative coronavirus cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, some Canadian provinces are now approaching US-level rates of infection. According to data published by the New York Times on Friday,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/world\/canada\/canada-coronavirus-cases.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quebec\u2019s COVID-19 infection rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0over the past seven days is nearing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/us\/coronavirus-us-cases.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida\u2019s rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and has surpassed the rate in Arizona and California. Alberta\u2019s rate is nearing that of California\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like Europe, Canada could now face the prospect of a second lockdown and the tightening of coronavirus restrictions already in place. Yet the federal government has played down the possibility.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa is not intent on plunging the country into another shutdown and that Canada is better equipped to handle the current wave of cases than the first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have a better understanding of COVID-19.
