It would also help solve the economic crisis, proponents say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTheoretically if you have the possibility of doing a hard lockdown &#8230; after nine days you see the effect kick in very reliably,\u201d Peter J\u00fcni, director of the applied health research center at Toronto\u2019s St. Michael\u2019s Hospital, told CBC Wednesday. \u201cStuff like that is theoretically possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence suggests it might work. As the Vancouver-based Asia Pacific Foundation has shown in its research, places like China and Singapore followed similar advice,\u00a0got the virus under control and reopened businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After 85,000 cases and nearly 5,000 deaths, China\u2019s case count is now estimated at 400 in a population of 1.3 billion. Note: that\u2019s about the same number as Toronto reported on a single day this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thecurrent\/the-current-for-oct-13-2020-1.5760007\/journalist-ethan-lou-on-living-through-lockdown-around-the-world-1.5760388\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s economy has bounced back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Retail spending recently climbed above pre-COVID-19 levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some believe that Asia\u2019s case is unique. They put the region\u2019s success down to autocratic governments and an obedient population. Yet others point out that such conditions do not apply to Thailand, for example, where\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/country\/thailand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cases remain low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, people point to New Zealand,\u00a0which has had only 25 deaths, and Australia, which despite\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sxsrf=ALeKk01Ppuu0SOWGRGE2nWMsZsTEYRDgYg%3A1605202938340&amp;ei=-nOtX7yiFLWs5NoP15-RuAo&amp;q=australia+covid&amp;oq=australia+c&amp;gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQARgAMgQIIxAnMgQIIxAnMhAIABCxAxCDARDJAxAUEIcCMggIABCxAxCDATIHCC4QsQMQQzICCAAyBQgAELEDMgIILjICCAAyAggAOgcILhAnEJMCOgcILhDJAxBDOgQILhBDOgcIABCxAxBDOgQIABBDOgUIABDJAzoHCAAQFBCHAjoECAAQCjoHCAAQsQMQCjoKCAAQsQMQgwEQCjoKCAAQsQMQsQMQCjoKCCMQsQIQyQMQJzoHCCMQsQIQJ1DTHVjAMGCKTWgDcAB4AIABjwGIAeEFkgEDMC42mAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdpesABAQ&amp;sclient=psy-ab\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a second peak,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0which has cut serious cases\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/coronavirus\/country\/australia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to near zero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Zealand&#8217;s success can be partly attributed to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/world-52001578\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its early and strict<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0crackdown and careful watch on infections from abroad.
