{"id":28454,"date":"2021-01-03T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2021-01-03T12:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=28454"},"modified":"2021-01-03T18:58:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-03T18:58:12","slug":"the-vaccine-is-here-but-the-hard-work-is-just-beginning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/innovation-business\/the-vaccine-is-here-but-the-hard-work-is-just-beginning\/","title":{"rendered":"The hard work is just beginning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Logistical challenges remain as s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hipments of the <\/span>vaccine begin in the US.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were sent distribution points across the United States on Sunday, with injections set to begin in the most pivotal moment since the COVID-19 pandemic began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruise operators Carnival Corp and Royal Caribbean Cruises rose 4.7% and 3.1%, respectively, in premarket trade, while stocks of major airline operators rose between 1.5% and 3.0%, with American Airlines Group leading gains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The travel and leisure industries were among the worst hit by restrictions on movement due to the pandemic and unsurprisingly are reacting positively to any vaccine-related news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc surged 31.3% and was set to hit a 4-1\/2 year high after drugmaker AstraZeneca said it would buy the U.S. biotech firm for $39 billion in one of this year\u2019s biggest mergers. AstraZeneca\u2019s U.S.-listed shares fell 5.8%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shares of delivery firms FedEx Corp and United Parcel Service Inc, which are leading the vaccine distribution project, rose about 1.7% and 1.9%, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. stocks had already rallied over the past few weeks with the S&amp;P 500 touching a series of record highs as markets bet on the quick approval and roll-out of a vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, uncertainty over more fiscal stimulus had hindered gains. Last week the Senate approved a one-week extension of federal funding to avoid a government shutdown and to provide more time for negotiations on coronavirus relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>The rollout<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. government is prepping millions of doses of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=PFE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=BNTX\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BioNTech\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0coronavirus vaccine for shipment to sites across the nation in support of what may be the most ambitious immunization program in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FedEx\u00a0and the\u00a0United Parcel Service will play crucial roles in distributing the vaccine, which is fragile and requires special treatment. Shipments will get priority access at airports. If a plane with vaccines is coming in for landing, other passenger planes will have to circle and wait their turn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the other vaccine candidates, Pfizer\u2019s is especially difficult to store and ship as it needs to be kept incredibly cold, as in minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit, in a sealed box, with dry ice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That suitcase-sized box, something they call a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-conclude-phase-3-study-covid-19-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thermal shipper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d contains anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 doses.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These custom thermal shippers\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-conclude-phase-3-study-covid-19-vaccine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">act as mobile freezers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for clinics that don\u2019t have the necessary specialty equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FedEx and UPS have been enlisted to transport the thermal shippers from Pfizer storage sites in Michigan and Wisconsin to 64 states, territories, and major cities across the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both companies\u00a0have spent years\u00a0building up their health-care logistics businesses, so they already have systems in place to allow for special handling of fragile medical products. Furthermore, the two companies have collectively hired 170,000 additional employees to keep pace with demand. They said the vaccines would get the highest priority of all of their deliveries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both UPS and FedEx will use high-tech tracking devices to monitor packages carrying the vaccine, both to ensure speed of delivery and the safety of the product itself. These built-in systems will detect motion, light exposure, as well as temperature and GPS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Local governments concerned<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are still a range of obstacles ahead, however. States and cities say they are worried about what happens when the vaccine arrives on their doorstep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the government has spent about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/coronavirus\/explaining-operation-warp-speed\/index.html#:~:text=How%20is%20Operation%20Warp%20Speed,also%20appropriated%20other%20flexible%20funding.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0$10 billion to develop\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the vaccine, so far, states have only\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/national-governors-association-questions-on-vaccine-distribution-planning.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received $200 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from the CDC for distribution purposes.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/national-governors-association-questions-on-vaccine-distribution-planning.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Another $140 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is expected to be distributed in mid December.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, CDC director Robert Redfield\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?475764-1\/coronavirus-vaccine-widely-late-2021-cdc-director\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told a Senate panel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in September that, \u201cit\u2019s going to take somewhere between $5.5 [billion] to $6 billion to distribute this vaccine. It\u2019s as urgent as getting these manufacturing facilities up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State health officials have asked for even more than that. They are requesting\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/astho.org\/Federal-Government-Relations\/Correspondence\/ASTHO-AIM-Funds-for-Vaccination-Distribution-Letter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at least $8.4 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for Covid-19 vaccination distribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distribution comes as state and local governments are more strapped for cash than ever, amid increased expenses due to the pandemic and lost tax revenue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine is here.
