{"id":28895,"date":"2021-01-28T16:42:34","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T16:42:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=28895"},"modified":"2021-01-28T16:46:24","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T16:46:24","slug":"hope-on-the-horizon-for-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/business\/innovation-business\/hope-on-the-horizon-for-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Hope on the horizon for Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economic impact of the pandemic in Canada has been brutally unequal and threatens to last,\u00a0but there are positives to be found in the predictions towards recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All economic downturns include disparities. Inevitably, some people get harder hit than others. But almost a year into the COVID-19 crisis, the conclusions drawn from the data in Canada are clear:\u00a0the impact of the coronavirus pandemic is especially unequal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a million Canadians remain\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/jobs-december-statscan-1.5865905\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under- or unemployed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0while millions more have simply adjusted to working from home.\u00a0The second wave of COVID-19 cases and increased restrictions in many parts of the country have pummeled citizens who were already vulnerable. On the other hand, Canadians\u00a0who were lucky enough to keep\u00a0their jobs have been able to save\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economics.cibccm.com\/economicsweb\/cds?ID=11759&amp;TYPE=EC_PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than $170 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on things like travel, commuting, and child care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stock markets have soared to all-time highs\u00a0even while the global economy collapsed. Since bottoming out last April, both the Dow\u00a0and the S&amp;P are up more than 60%. The sale of recreational real estate, such as cottages,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/royal-lepage-cottage-prices-1.5822155\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has soared 11.5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the first nine months of 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the definition of what is known as a K-shaped recovery, i.e.\u00a0people on the lower branches of the tree have seen their fortunes fall and are yet to recover them while those higher up have prospered. And the effect may linger long after the pandemic is over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of these effects could end up being permanent, and the bottom part of the K could persist for quite a while,&#8221; said\u00a0former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz, speaking at an online event on\u00a0Jan. 13\u00a0hosted by Western University&#8217;s\u00a0Ivey Business School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concern for many is that the\u00a0deepening inequality of the downturn\u00a0will lead to what economists call scarring:\u00a0long-term job losses that result in lower growth and drag the economy down as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poloz believes\u00a0the key right now is to support Canadians who are still suffering financially. He pointed out that\u00a0interest rates remain at historic lows.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe main thing is for us to focus on boosting growth,\u201d <strong>he said.<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m hopeful that, in this context that we find ourselves, we can have more federal and provincial collaboration that allows us to do some things that will boost growth forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the positive side, most experts agree\u00a0the recovery is almost upon us. Daily coronavirus case numbers are finally starting to decrease. Vaccines are beginning to\u00a0roll out, albeit slowly. Economic forecasts from the major Canadian banks suggest\u00a0impressive growth in April, May, and June. Even taking into account a negative quarter of growth to start the year, economists are predicting GDP will come in around 4.5-5% for 2021 and at a similar level in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may sound like false optimism for those hit worst by the crisis, but the reality is that it\u2019s been decades since Canada has enjoyed that level of growth. If and when it comes, it will mean investment and building\u2014and that means jobs will be created.
