{"id":29264,"date":"2021-02-26T11:26:53","date_gmt":"2021-02-26T17:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ceo-na.com\/?p=29264"},"modified":"2021-03-01T09:36:25","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T15:36:25","slug":"monitoring-global-progress-on-the-covid-19-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/servidor-mxigen1.com\/ceona-antiguo\/opinion\/monitoring-global-progress-on-the-covid-19-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitoring global progress on the COVID-19 vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The World Economic Forum has created a visualization tracking country-by-country progress made on vaccination to date.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Countries around the world are racing to vaccinate their populations against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to reach\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2021\/02\/herd-immunity-might-be-impossible-even-vaccines\/617973\/\">herd immunity<\/a>, it\u2019s estimated that at least 60% of a population (and as much as 90%) must become immune thanks either to prior infection or vaccination. But as of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/10-02-2021-in-the-covid-19-vaccine-race-we-either-win-together-or-lose-together\">10 February<\/a>\u00a0nearly 130 countries, with a collective population of 2.5 billion, had yet to administer a single vaccine dose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/science\/coronavirus-vaccine-tracker.html\">10 different<\/a>\u00a0COVID-19 vaccines have been approved or authorized for emergency or limited use, the practical business of administering jabs has been hindered by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1954675\/covid-19-vaccine-delays-reveal-a-shortage-of-healthcare-workers\/\">staffing<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-vaccines-needles-idUSKBN29Y10C\">supply<\/a>\u00a0shortages, procurement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sciencebusiness.net\/news\/eus-lead-covid-19-vaccines-negotiator-defends-contracts\">hiccups<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/ukrainealert\/geopolitics-complicates-ukraines-vaccine-quest\/\">geopolitics<\/a>. Concerns have also been raised about equitable access for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/coronavirus-vaccines-poor-countries-equal-access\/\">poorer countries<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/09\/us\/politics\/biden-vaccination-race-data.html?action=click&amp;module=Top%20Stories&amp;pgtype=Homepage\">historically-marginalized<\/a>\u00a0communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But there have also been positive signs, including Israel\u2019s relatively\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-israel-results-ins\/vaccine-vs-variant-promising-data-in-israels-race-to-defeat-pandemic-idUSKBN2AA0MS\">swift rollout<\/a>, an upwardly revised daily vaccination\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/biden-ups-vaccine-target-to-1-5-million-per-day-sees-us-herd-immunity-by-summer\/\">target<\/a>\u00a0in the US, and India\u2019s distribution of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/opinion\/2021\/01\/27\/commentary\/world-commentary\/free-vaccines-india-coronavirus-diplomacy\/\">free doses<\/a>\u00a0to countries including Myanmar and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Forum has created a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligence.weforum.org\/monitor\/latest-knowledge\/a2a34c73dcd14bc0ab7e65d0af600cde\">visualization<\/a>\u00a0tracking the progress made to date on vaccination against COVID-19, on a country-by-country basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While that presents a good illustration of initial progress, it\u2019s a somewhat limited view of the number of people fully vaccinated \u2013 given that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2021\/02\/02\/comparing-the-covid-19-vaccines-developed-by-pfizer-moderna-and-johnson-johnson\/\">many vaccines<\/a>\u00a0require more than one dose, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-statement-following-authorized-dosing-schedules-covid-19-vaccines#:~:text=The%20available%20data%20continue%20to,the%20first%20and%20second%20dose.\">interval<\/a>\u00a0between them can be nearly a month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Convidecia vaccine developed in China may just require just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-vaccine-cansinobio-idUSKBN2A111W\">one dose<\/a>, for example, but the Pfizer-BioNTech version already approved for use in several countries and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sputnikvaccine.com\/about-vaccine\/\">Sputnik V<\/a>\u00a0vaccine developed in Russia are among those that call for two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of new, potentially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/nervtag-update-note-on-b117-severity-11-february-2021?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=govuk-notifications&amp;utm_source=b6297c0b-901b-4db7-9b7e-9d22914d25c3&amp;utm_content=immediately\">more deadly<\/a>\u00a0coronavirus\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/act-like-youre-carrying-a-dangerous-coronavirus-mutation-because-you-might-be-154212\">mutations<\/a>\u00a0has added a sense of urgency to efforts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2021\/01\/new-coronavirus-variants-could-cause-more-reinfections-require-updated-vaccines\">contain<\/a>\u00a0the pandemic \u2013 while prompting the exploration of ways to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-00241-6\">redesign<\/a>\u00a0existing vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For more context, here are links to further reading from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/intelligence.weforum.org\/\">the World Economic Forum\u2019s Strategic Intelligence platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By Andrew Berkley &amp;
